Baseball Loses 5-4 on Walk Off In Extra Innings

LONG BEACH, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i baseball team dropped game two 5-4 against Long Beach State Saturday afternoon at Blair Field.

The Rainbow Warriors (6-12, 0-2) held the lead late into the game, but untimely walks from the bullpen allowed Long Beach (10-8, 2-0) to stay in it.

The 'Bows jumped on the Dirtbags early, scoring a run from sophomore second baseman Stone Miyao's groundout RBI in the second to take a 1-0 lead.

The Warriors followed up in the fourth inning when junior first baseman Jacob Igawa doubled to left field. Graduate center fielder Cole Cabrera then singled up the middle to score Igawa with two outs extending the lead to 2-0.

LBSU would get one back in the bottom of the fifth, when a bloop double would score a runner from first.

In the sixth, Igawa reached base on a single. Two batters later, Matt Wong squared one up and hit a tank over the left-field wall for his first homer, giving the 'Bows a 4-1 lead.

Long Beach threatened in the bottom of the seventh after the first two batters reached on a hit-by-pitch. A botched double player left runners on the corners before the third hit batter of the inning loaded the bases. A miscommunication crossed up the pitcher and catcher, allowing a passed ball scoring one. Igawa made an excellent backhand grab on the next play, getting out of the jam with a 4-2 lead headed into the eighth.

In the bottom of the ninth, the 'Bows found themselves in another bases-loaded jam with two out. The 'Bows bullpen walked five batters and were credited with a blown save but got out of the inning tied 4-4 and headed to extras for the second time this season.

The Warriors threatened in the top of the tenth but could not manage to get any runs across. The Dirtbags launched a walk-off home run in the bottom of the tenth to get a 5-4 win.

Junior pitcher Cade Halemanu had his best outing of the season so far. He went six innings, allowing one run on three hits. It was the longest outing by any pitcher to date.

Wong continues to perform as he racked up two more hits and two more RBIs for the Warriors. Cabrera and Igawa also had two hits each.

The Rainbow Warriors returns for Sunday's game at 10:00 am HT.
