Hawai‘i Comes Up Short to UNLV on Second Day of Tony Gwynn Legacy

SAN DIEGO, CALIF.— The University of Hawai'i baseball team dropped the second game of the Tony Gwynn Legacy by a 9-3 score to UNLV on Saturday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium.

The Rainbow Warriors (2-4) mirrored what they did a week ago by losing on Friday and Saturday, with chances to swing it back in their favor with games on Sunday and Monday. The Runnin' Rebels (3-3) have won back-to-back games in the legacy after entering Friday with a three-game losing streak.

UNLV capitalized on two walks to start the bottom of the second inning, as a ground ball advanced the runners, followed by a passed ball to score the first run of the afternoon. The Rebels added two more runs in the inning off a balk with runners on the corners, followed by a single to right field scoring a runner from second.

UH followed up later in the fifth with a three-spot of their own. Sophomore designated hitter Stone Miyao led off with a single, followed by junior Matt Wong singling up the middle putting runners at first and second with no outs. Junior third baseman Aaron Ujimori smacked a ground-rule double down the right-field line, sending Miyao home, and brought the score to 3-1. Freshman second baseman Jordan Donahue later sent Wong home on a sacrifice fly. A batter later another run scored on an error after a bad throw following a bouncer by senior left fielder Scotty Scott to second base, sending Ujimori in to make it 3-3.

Momentum swung back to the Rebels in the sixth and the seventh as they picked up three runs in both innings for a 9-3 advantage and the eventual final.

Graduate Andy Archer started the game and showed brilliance with a 10 pitch top of the first but struggled with command in four innings of work, allowing four walks, three earned runs and two strikeouts. Senior Buddie Pidel came on relief and picked up the loss after an inning and a third, allowing three earned runs.

In his season debut, sophomore shortstop Kyson Donahue led the offense by going 2-for-4 at the plate with two singles. Scott picked up another hit, extending his on-base streak to six to start the season.

The 'Bows will be in action with their third and final game of the Tony Gwynn Legacy on Sunday against Fresno State; first pitch is scheduled for 8 a.m. HT.
