HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team (16-6, 13-1 Big West) swept Cal State Fullerton (12-10, 6-8 BW), 25-18, 25-18, 25-18 on Saturday night at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. Hawai'i's middle blockers—
Amber Igiede and
Tiffany Westerberg hit a combined .538 while putting down 23 kills and posting seven blocks between the two juniors. As a team, The Rainbow Wahine hit .353 (46-10-102) which propelled the 'Bows to their 10
th sweep of the season.
Igiede recorded match-highs of 15 kills and four blocks. She hit an even .500 with two errors on 26 swings. It marked her 20
th double-digit kill match of the season. Westerberg posted a match-high .615 hitting percentage with eight kills on 13 errorless swings and was in on three blocks.
Riley Wagoner notched her fourth double-double of the year with 10 kills and a match-high 11 digs. For Wagoner, it was her fifth-straight match with at least 10 digs. She added an assist and a block to fill out her stat line.
Kate Lang issued 37 assists as the 'Bows hit over .300 for the eighth time this season. Of UH's 46 kills, the middles had 23 and the pin-hitters had a combined 21. In the third set she made a diving dig in the middle of a rally for her 400
th career dig of the sophomore setter's career. She finished the night with six digs and two kills.
Hawai'i started the first set with the lead, but the Titans quickly turned the tide, going on an 8-to-2 scoring run to go up by four at 12-8, forcing an early timeout. Hawai'I regrouped and came roaring back, scoring eight-consecutive points with
Tayli Ikenaga behind the service line as Igiede asserted herself with three kills and two blocks (one solo) during the run. Hawai'i would lead by as many as six as the 'Bows took the frame, 25-18 on a service ace by Caylen Alexander.
The Rainbow Wahine led by five early to start Set 2 at 8-3 and never looked back. Fullerton would trim their deficit in half to trail by just three at three different times. But each time the 'Bows came back firing, never letting Fullerton get any closer. At set point, Wagoner ended a long rally with her fifth put-down to win Set 2, 25-18.

Robyn Ah Mow issued a challenge on an out call off a Westerberg attack. The call was overturned and instead of the Titans leading, the score was knotted at 5-5. Alexander promply began a three-point scoring spurt with her thid ace of the match as UH leapfrogged into the lead at 8-5. UH would build a four point lead, but could not shake off the Titans. Fullerton kept fighting and closed to within one point at 16-15. Later a 5-to-0 scoring run with
Kendra Ham serving put the match out of reach as UH took a 23-16. Hawai'i would seal the sweep with a 25-18 Set 3 win.
Hawai'i out-hit the Titans, 46-to-33 and percentage-wise .353-to-.121. UH had a 43-to-32 advantage in assists and out-blocked the Titans, 7.0-to-4.0 but Fullerton out-dug UH, 41-to-37 and had six service aces to UH's four.
The Titans had two players with double-digit kills—Lolo Fonua had 11 while Lyla Traylor added 10. Setter Elizabeth Schuster had 26 assists while Nadia Koanui recorded a match-high 13 digs while three Titans had two blocks apiece.
Next up, Hawai'i travels to California to take on UC San Diego on Friday, Nov. 11 at 5:00 p.m. HT. The following night, The Rainbow Wahine will battle UC Irvine on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 3:00 p.m. HT.
