NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—The Univeristy of Hawai'i women's volleyball team (22-6, 19-1 Big West) extended their season-long win streak to 12 with a 25-18, 25-20, 18-25, 25-9 win at CSUN (9-23, 4-16 BW) on Saturday night in the Premier America Credit Union Arena. Hawai'i, which wrapped up its third-straight Big West title on Friday at UC Santa Barbara, posted a conference-best 19 wins, which is the most in BW history after the league expanded to 20 matches last year with the addition of CSU Bakersfield and UC San Diego.
Amber Igiede was everywhere on the court, putting down a match-high 19 kills while hitting .607 (19-2-28). She dealt out a career-high four service aces to go with six digs and six blocks. It is the third time this year that she has hit over .600 in a match and she now has 26 double-digit kill matches under her belt this season. She took over the fourth set accounting for six of UH's first nine points in the frame with six kills plus a service ace. She ended in the fourth set alone tallying six kills on seven errorless swings for a .857 hitting percentage with four digs, a block and two service aces--including a walk-off ace that ended the match.
Caylen Alexander put down 12 kills and was in on a career-high 6.0 blocks—including two block solos which is also a career-high. It marked her 15th double-digit kill match overall, and her third in last four. For the weekend, Alexander buried 28 kills while hitting .306 against UCSB and CSUN.
Setters
Kate Lang and
Mylana Byrd combined for 40 assists with 34 and six respectively as they led UH's offense to hit its 13th match over .300 with a .312 team hitting percentage. Hawai'i has finished the regular season strong, hitting over .300 in six of the last seven matches.
Hawai'i never trailed through the first two frames. In Set 1, a 4-to-0 UH scoring run gave the 'Bows an early 8-3 lead. The Matadors responded by scoring the next five to knot the score at 8-8. A 6-to-2 run gave UH some breathing room at 14-10 lead and from there, UH would slowly pull away to take Set 1, 25-18.
The Rainbow Wahine led by as many as six at 16-10 in Set 2. The Matadors rallied for a 7-to-2 run that tied the frame up at 19-19. Hawai'i then hit the gas and closed out the set on a 6-to-2 run with two kills from Annika De Goede, one kill by Igiede and three attack errors by CSUN. UH won Set 2, 25-20 to take a 2-0 match lead.
Set 3 was all CSUN. The Matadors took their first lead of the match at 2-1 and never looked back. A 7-to-1 run gave CSUN its biggest lead of seven at 21-14. Hawai'i tried to chip away unsuccessfully as CSUN won going away, 25-18.
Igiede took over Set 4, accounting for six of UH's first eight points with five kills and an ace. With UH leading 10-3, CSUN had already called both their timeouts. Hawai'i led by as many as 15 at 22-7 and ended up recording the most lopsided set win of the season at 25-9, the lowest opponent set score since UC Davis scored seven in Set 2 on Oct. 29, 2021. In Set 4, UH held CSUNto just five kill as they hit -.100 and had a sideout percentage of 36%.
The Rainbow Wahine out hit CSUN 56-to-43 in kills, .312-to-.1779 in hitting percentage and 10-to-4 in service aces. CSUN's hitting percentage marked the 14th time and sixth out of the last seven games that UH has held their opponent below .200 H%. Hawai'i edged out CSUN 46-to-41 in assists and 13.0-to-10.0 in blocks. The Matadors had a 50-to-46 advantage in digs. Thirteen UH players saw action and all nine hitters recorded at least one kill.
CSUN's Carissa Barron had a team-high 14 kills and Breanna Micthell popped up 13 digs with Lauryn Anderson coming up with a team-high four blocks. Setters Kaia Kanan and Barron had 17 and 22 assists respectively.
UH will find out where they will open the 2022 NCAA Tournament on Sunday, Nov. 27 at 2:30 P.M. HT on ESPNU's NCAA Selection Show. It is UH's 29th-consecutive and 40th overall appearance in the NCAA tourney.
