Middle Blockers Power Women's Volleyball Past UC Irvine

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team (8-5, 5-0 Big West) powered past UC Irvine (10-5, 3-2 BWC) for its sixth sweep of the season and fourth in conference play, 25-17, 25-19, 25-13 on Friday night at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. Hawai'i's middles set the pace as Amber Igiede, Tiffany Westerberg, and Kennedi Evans combined for 30 kills on 41 errorless swings as Hawai'i as a team hit a season-high .471 (56-8-102). With the win, UH now sits atop the Big West standings as the lone unbeaten team in the conference.

Igiede put down 16 kills and no errors in 24 attacks for a season-best .667 hitting percentage. She added a career-high four assists, two digs and two blocks for a team-best 17.0 points. Westerberg tied her career-high with 12 kills with no errors on 15 swings for a career-high .800 hitting percentage and she was in on two blocks. Evans entered late in the third set to record her first two kills as a Rainbow Wahine with no errors. Combined the trio of middles hit for .732.

Riley Wagoner notched her seventh-straight double-digit kill match of the season with 10. She had just one error in 29 swings for a .310 average to go with a team-high four blocks. In the third set, she recorded her 500th career kill.

Setter Kate Lang dealt out a career-high three service aces and a match-high 42 assists and she had one solo block.

In her first start of the season, Annika de Goede got off to a good start, putting down four kills in the first set. She ended with seven kills with a dig and a block to help UH.

The first set was tight early, but a six-point scoring run with Caylen Alexander serving gave UH some breathing room as they would go on to coast to a 25-17 win.

The second set was much tighter with 11 ties and five lead changes until it was 14-14. UH took a 15-14 lead into the media timeout and never trailed again in the frame. Hawai'i head coach Robyn Ah Mow challenged that there was a touch on UC Irvine's block on a ball that was initially called out. The call was overturned and instead of being tied at 15-15, UH went up 16-14. UH would outscore the Anteaters, 10-5 the rest of the way to take Set 2, 25-19.

Hawai'i led Set 3 from the get-go. UH would slowly pull away. With UH leading 18-12 and Lang behind the service line, the Rainbow Wahine would score five-straight points to take an 11 point lead at 23-12. UH would close out the match, 25-13.

Hawai'i out hit the Anteaters 56-to-35 in kills and .471-to-.272 in hitting percentage. UH had a 54-to-36 advantage in assists, 5-to-1 in service aces, and 37-to-29 in digs and out-blocked UCI, 6.0-to-5.0.

The Anteaters were led by Onye Ofoegbu's 11 kills. Campbell Jensen had a team-high seven digs and Ellen Vargas recorded a team-high four blocks.

Hawai'i once again has a quick turnaround as they take on UC San Diego on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 7:00 p.m. HT at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
