SAN DIEGO, Calif.—On Thursday, University of Hawai'i women's tennis players Ana Vilcek (singles) and doubles partners Nikola Homolkova and Klara Novakova, all advanced to Day 2 of the ITA Southwest Regional main draw. The five-day tournament is hosted at both the University of San Diego and San Diego State.
 
Day 1 started with doubles matches at the Aztec Tennis Center on the SDSU campus. UH newcomers Nikola Homolkova and Klara Novakova held off UC San Diego's Grace Gamal and Sophie Pearson in the Round of 64.  Hawai'i's duo of Madison Kim and Anna Kern fought hard, but came up a break short, falling to Cal State Fullerton's Natalie Duffy and Diana Yanotovskaya, 8-6. On Friday, Homolkova and Novakova will play fifth-seeded Naomi Cheng and Grace Piper of Southern California.
 
The Round of 128 singles matches were split between the USD and SDSU tennis courts. UH's Vilcek, Homolkova, Kim and Novakova all punched their tickets into the Round of 64 after recording first round wins. Vilcek defeated Alexandra Von Tersch Phrer of San Diego State in straight-sets, 6-4, 6-4. Homolkova took down UC San Diego's Sophie Pearson in a first tie breaker before doubling up in the second frame for the win, 7-6 (4) 6-3. At the Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center at USD, Kim fought back to defeat Marta Gonzalez-Gallbe in three, 7-5, 2-5, 6-2 while Novakova took care of Loyola Marymount's Luciana Kunkel in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
 
In the singles Round of 64, Vilcek was the lone Rainbow Wahine to survive into the third round. She upset 17^th-seeded Alexandra Vagramov of UCLA in consecutive sets, 7-5, 6-2. She will not face top-ranked and top-seeded Eryn Cayetano of USC on Friday.
