HONOLULU. – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team captured its sixth straight win after putting away CSUN, 72-65, Thursday night at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. With the win, the Rainbow Warriors (10-5) improved to a perfect 5-0 in the Big West and kept pace with Cal State Fullerton for first-place in the conference standings.
UH has started the Big West 5-0 just once before – during the 2015-16 season when the 'Bows went on to win the regular-season and tournament titles. The 'Bows, who led nearly the entirety of the game, did it with another well-rounded performance.
Bernardo da Silva led UH with career high 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting. He also added a game-high nine rebound to fall just short of a double-double.
Noel Coleman added 14 points, while
Junior Madut and
JoVon McClanahan each chipped in 10 points.
UH broke the game open in the first half, shooting 58 percent to take a 36-24 at the break. The 'Bows carved up the Matadors (5-13, 1-5) inside early before UH started to rain three-pointers, finishing with seven by the end of the half.
The 'Bows, who held the Matadors to just 38 percent shooting in the first frame, continued to get the job done on both ends of the court and built its lead to as many as 20 points midway through the second half.
UH maintained that double-digit lead for the majority of the way until CSUN made a late run that cut the final deficit to single digits. The 'Bows sealed the win at the free throw line where they were 19-of-23 (83 percent) on the night. UH also dominated the boards, finishing with a 41-26 advantage.
The 'Bows next take on defending Big West champions UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, Jan. 29. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
