SALT LAKE CITY − Although the University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team had 10 more kills than Utah, the Rainbow Wahine fell to their second ranked opponent in two days, falling 3-1 (15-25, 25-23, 18-25, 22-25) on Sunday.
The Rainbow Wahine (2-4) were led by redshirt senior
Brooke Van Sickle's 19 kills and sophomore
Amber Igiede's efficient 11 kill night, but a season-worst 35 attacking errors for the team allowed the Utes to capitalize. Freshman
Tayli Ikenaga gathered in a match-high 14 digs.
Utah tallied 14 blocks in the match with 10 service aces to go along with their strong blocking.
The 'Bows hung tight for the first half of the first set, staying within one or two points until it was 11-10 Utah. An 11-4 run by the Utes helped clear the way for a 25-15 first set win.
Set two was a cagey affair, with five different lead changes and eight different tie scores. Hawai'i ended up on top of the set thanks to 15 kills in the set and Utah hitting just .069 in the set.
The third game was tight for the first half, just like the first set was, but Utah used a 13-6 run to end the set due in part to a balanced attack and solid serving to swipe the set 25-18.
Hawai'i tallied 19 kills in the fourth set, hitting .333 but were out-hit by Utah's .417 clip. Both attacking numbers for the set were each team's highest output for the night across all four sets.
The Rainbow Wahine return to the islands for a two-match series against USC Friday and Saturday Sept. 10-11 in SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. First serve for both matches will be at 7 p.m. HT.
