SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i men's tennis team wrapped up the Battle in the Bay Classic on Sunday. Both
Andre Ilagan and
Axel Labrunie competed in singles and doubles matches to end the five-day tournament hosted by the California Tennis Club in San Francisco, Calif.
After Saturday's matches were rained out, play resumed on Sunday. In doubles, Ilagan and Labrunie faced Oklahoma's Mason Beiler and Baptiste Anselmo in a fiercely contested consolation back draw match. The Rainbow Warriors fought to stave off three match points and also had one match point of their own before falling 8-7 (7) in the tiebreaker.
Both Ilagan and Labrunie notched victories in singles. Ilagan cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Oklahoma's Anselmo, while Labrunie knocked off San Francisco's David Woodland, 6-1, 6-3.
The men's tennis team has a busy week ahead as the team will split to play in both the Rancher Invitational in Westlake, Calif. (Sept. 23-26) and the HPU/UH-Hilo Invitational at Central O'ahu Regional Park in Waipahu, O'ahu (Sept. 24-26, Oct. 16-17).
