HONOLULU – In an eerily similar match as Friday night, the University of Hawai'i and USC played a back-and-forth match that ended in USC favors, 3-1 (21-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-23).
For the seventh time in eight matches this season, redshirt senior
Brooke Van Sickle led the Rainbow Wahine in kills, adding 12 more to her season total. Van Sickle also led UH in blocks with a season-high five blocks.
Sophomore
Amber Igiede added 11 kills on a team-high .450 hitting percentage and added two blocks.
Hawai'i (3-5) started strong, graciously accepting multiple Trojan errors early in the set, going up 5-2 on an ace by sophomore
Riley Wagoner, the first point of the night UH had scored on their own.
USC (4-4) climbed back into the set to cut the lead to just 11-10 UH, but more USC errors helped Hawaii take an 18-12 lead. The Rainbow Wahine cruised to a 25-21 first set victory behind 11 total kills, four from Igiede.
The second set started and ended exactly like Friday night's second set started and ended. With USC jumping on Hawai'i and running away with the set. The Trojans hit .342 in the set and tallied 18 kills in the set.
Hawai'i reversed the narrative in the third set, pouncing on USC early. But USC came thundering back. With UH up 20-11, the Trojans scored eight straight points to tie the score and then take the lead 22-21 and then 23-21.
The fourth set was tight from start to finish, tied eight times and with three different lead changes. Ultimately, USC took the set 25-23 after out-hitting UH .231-.154.
The Rainbow Wahine will host an alumnae match Sept. 17 before going on the road to open Big West play at UC Riverside and UC Davis Sept. 23 and 25, respectively.
