CORVALLIS, Ore. — For the second time this season, the University of Hawai'i Rainbow Warrior football team found rough sledding against a Pac-12 team on the road with a 45-27 loss to Oregon State Saturday night at Reser Stadium. UH dropped to 1-2 on the season.
In a start reminiscent of its season-opener at UCLA, UH suffered a devastating first quarter from which it couldn't recover. The Beavers jumped out to a 21-0 lead in an opening frame that saw UH out-gained, 219-36.
Oregon State (1-1) ultimately scored on all four of its possessions in the first half to take a 24-7 lead at halftime and despite a valiant effort after the break, the Warriors would get no closer than 11 in the second half.
The Beavers, who accumulated 556 yards of offense, sported a balanced attack. B.J. Baylor rushed for 171 yards and three touchdowns, including a 67-yard dash early in the game. Meanwhile, OSU quarterback Chance Nolan completed his first 13 pass attempts and finished the game 21-of-29 for 302 yards and two touchdowns.
Playing catch-up all night long, UH also moved the ball successfully after its shaky start. Despite not throwing for a single yard in the first quarter,
Chevan Cordeiro finished with 366 yards passing and a pair of touchdowns. Meanwhile,
Calvin Turner Jr. scored three touchdowns – two rushing and one receiving – while racking up 191 all-purpose yards. Turner (106 yards) and
Nick Mardner (110) each finished with 100-yard receiving games while each recorded a touchdown catch.
Defensive end
O'tay Baker led the Warriors defense with a team-high seven tackles and a sack.
With the loss UH remains winless in three all-time visits to Corvallis. The Warriors have also dropped five of its last six meetings with the Beavers with the lone win coming in 2019 in Honolulu.
The Rainbow Warriors next return home and open Mountain West play by hosting defending conference champion San Jose State. Kickoff is 6:30 p.m. HT at the Clarence T.C. Ching Complex.
