Troupe Completes Hill's 1st Staff

HONOLULU – Hawai'i baseball head coach Rich Hill completed his coaching staff on Friday with the hiring of former Arizona pitching standout Mathew Troupe, the Rainbow Warriors' new volunteer assistant coach and pitching coach.

"Matt Troupe is an absolute rising star in this profession," Hawai'i head coach Rich Hill said. "The thing that stands out is his ability to connect with pitchers. He's very well versed in the technology today that our pitchers need to get to the next level. His infectious personality and positivity are a perfect fit for UH!"

Troupe currently acts as the pitching coach for the Orleans Firebirds, a collegiate summer baseball league team in the Cape Cod League, arguably the most prestigious summer league in the country. The former 17th round MLB draft pick in 2011 has been the pitching coach for Orleans since 2019 and in his first year with the team the pitching staff led the Cape in ERA and two pitchers were selected to the All-Star Game. Six players from the pitching staff were selected in the 2020 MLB Draft, as well as three more free agent signings.

"I can't thank Coach Hill enough for giving me the opportunity to join his coaching staff at the University of Hawai'i," Troupe said. "I am excited to get to work with the team and proudly represent such a special program. Let's go 'Bows!"

Troupe also serves as the pitching coach for Team Britain, which finished with the program's second-best record at the 2019 European Championships (5-4 record).

While at Arizona, Troupe emerged as the team's closer during the beginning of his freshman season, guiding the Wildcats to the 2012 National Championship. He earned two victories in the 2012 College World Series closing out the first game in extra innings against Florida State and also closing out the final game of the National Championship against South Carolina, helping the Wildcats capture the title. He finished his career with a 12-1 record and 15 saves and 93 strikeouts in 74.0 innings pitched.

Prior to his time in the Cape, Troupe served as the Director of Baseball Operations on Hill's staff at San Diego in 2019 and before leaving and then returning to act as the Director of Player Development in 2021.

Before joining Hill at San Diego, Troupe joined the Emory University baseball coaching staff as the pitching coach in 2017 where he helped Emory to a 27-14 record and a berth to the NCAA Tournament. While there he guided sophomore Billy Dimlow to one of the finest pitching seasons in program history, earning Billy First Team All-America recognition and Pitcher of the Year honors. Freshman Richard Brereton earned UAA Rookie of the Year after his great season on the mound. Brereton recently signed a Free Agent deal to play in the Chicago Cubs
organization. Emory, as a staff, ranked among the nation's leaders at year's end in several statistical categories including shutouts (6th , 7), strikeouts-per-nine innings (7th, 8.8),
strikeout-to-walk ratio (15th, 2.77), earned-run average (28th, 3.49) and WHIP (39th, 1.36).

Troupe is a native of Northridge, Calif. and the son of Mark and Lyndy Troupe. This past month in July, he got engaged to his high school sweetheart Rachel. In 2019, he was inducted into the Chaminade College Preparatory (West Hills, Calif.) Hall of Fame.
