HONOLULU – Marquette's offense proved to be too much against the Hawai'i's women's volleyball team on Saturday at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center, falling to the Golden Eagles in straight sets, 3-0 (24-26, 25-27, 21-25). The win gives Marquette a 2-0 all-time series record over Hawai'i.
The Golden Eagles hit .303 for the match and had three players in double figures for kills, with three four hitting over .375 for the night.
On UH's side, redshirt senior
Brooke Van Sickle led all players with 14 kills, the second-night in a row the Washington-native led the match in kills. The outside hitter also added a match-high four aces.
Neither team led by more than two points in the first set, with Hawai'i throwing the first punches leading 4-2, 8-6 and 10-8 before Marquette was able to close the gap and take their first lead at 11-10.
The Golden Eagles and Rainbow Wahine traded blows all the way to the end with Hawaii staving off two set points before ultimately falling 26-24 in the set.
Marquette jumped on Hawaii in the second set, forcing head coach
Robyn Ah Mow to call timeout at 5-1 MU.
Hawai'i battled back however, tying the set at 10-10 and then continuing to stay close as the teams were tied at 11's and then just about every two points the rest of the way before Marquette squeezed out the set 27-25.
The third set started off in the worst possible way for the Rainbow Wahine, allowing Marquette to take a 6-0 lead and then a 15-5 lead.
The 'Bows never gave up though, surging back and forcing Marquette to use both timeouts as UH clawed back to within four points late. Ultimately, the 10-point deficit was too much to overcome and the Golden Eagles took the set and the match 25-21.
UH closes out the Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic against Texas A&M on Sunday with first serve set for 5 p.m. HT.
