Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Johnson, Van Sickle Lead Sweep of Aggies

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball rebounded from a three-set loss with a resounding sweep of Texas A&M on Sunday at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center (25-23, 25-21, 25-23).

In her first start as a Rainbow Wahine, freshman Mia Johnson got off to a thunderous start, tallying nine kills on 20 swings early through the second set.

For the third-straight match, redshirt senior Brooke Van Sickle led all players in kills, recording her 17th and final kill to end the match.

For Texas A&M, Morgan Christon posted 16 kills with just one attacking error for a match-high .455 hitting percentage (minimum 10 attempts).

The Rainbow Wahine (2-1) out-hit the Aggies (1-2) .274 to .230 but the contributions of Johnson and Van Sickle edged out Christon's efforts opposite the net.

Set one saw back-and-forth action from the first serve to the last point with neither team posting a lead larger than two all set. Johnson started strong, recording kills on four of her first seven swings without an error.

Three straight points to open the second set helped Hawai'i open a comfortable cushion that would extend to as large as five points multiple times. Van Sickle and Johnson propelled the offense with 10 combined kills in the set.

Johnson did not record a hitting error until she was blocked with UH leading 19-14 in the second set. All three of Johnson's errors came in the second set.

Hawai'i started the third with a 6-0 run to begin the set thanks to three of Johnson's five kills in the set. The Aggies didn't go quietly, however, closing the gap thanks to a 10-5 run, taking a 19-18 lead. The Rainbow Wahine closed the door without further worries.

Sophomore Amber Igiede, who tallied 23 total kills and 10 total blocks, was named to the all-tournament team with Van Sickle who had 47 kills on a .394 hitting percentage for the weekend.

Marquette's Taylor Wolf was named tournament MVP and was joined on the all-tourney team with teammates Hannah Vanden Berg and Savannah Rennie. Fairfield's KJ Johnson and Texas A&M's Laura Davis rounded out the awards.
