HONOLULU – University of Hawai'i baseball head coach
Rich Hill announced the second addition to his coaching staff with Hawai'i native Dan Cox named Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator for the Rainbow Warriors.
"We are super excited to add Dan Cox as our assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. Dan brings over 15 years of experience as a Major League scout with several organizations. He has a level 10 reputation as an outstanding evaluator and recruiter. He understands the national landscape of college baseball and no one knows the landscape of Hawai'i baseball better than Dan Cox. Let's go Bows!"
Cox brings 17 years of amateur scouting experience for MLB organizations to the Rainbow Warriors and is no stranger to the Rainbow Warriors program as he has scouted the Hawaiian Islands for MLB teams for 16 of his 17 years as a scout.
"I would like to thank athletic director Dave Matlin along with head coach Rich Hill for this opportunity of a lifetime," Cox said. "I'm ecstatic to not just work for the baseball program I grew up watching as a kid, but to play a big role in accomplishing something special with Rainbow Warrior Baseball.
"Coach Rich Hill has a vision to create a brand and culture where every young baseball player in Hawai'i grows up dreaming to play for UH, to get back to the 80's and early 90's when we packed out The Les and had the stadium rocking for the Rainbow Warriors. We're bringing that desire and excitement back and I'm honored to be part of it. I never imagined, as a kid growing up in Waimalu, that I would have this amazing opportunity. I promise I will pour everything I have into this opportunity and make the university and the Hawai'i baseball community proud. Go 'Bows!"
Most recently with the Atlanta Braves as an Area Scout for the Southern California and Hawai'i regions, Cox was mainly assigned to the San Diego and Hawai'i areas. With the Los Angeles Angels in the 2014 MLB Draft, the Angeles took San Diego third baseman Andrew Daniel, a player that would have been in Cox's region of scouting as The Angeles Area Scout of Southern California and Hawai'i.
The Aiea High School graduate got his first job in professional baseball in sales with the Dodgers and Angels before getting a job in baseball operations as an assistant to the Angels General Manager in the late 1990's.
Cox helped start MLB's Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities (R.B.I) program in Hawai'i and soon was given a scholarship to learn to become a scout for the Minnesota Twins, who drafted Kolten Wong in the 16th round in 2008 − although the Rainbow Warrior legend turned down professional baseball for Les Murakami Stadium where he would become a first-round pick.
Most recently as the Braves scouting representative in Hawai'i, Atlanta took Dylan Spain (a former UH Hilo pitcher) in the 10th round of the 2021 MLB Draft.
