Rainbow Wahine Split Doubleheader, But Take Series from Cal Poly

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CALIF.— The University of Hawai'i softball team split its doubleheader with Cal Poly on Saturday at Bob Janssen Field but won the first game of the day for a sweep of the three games counting towards the Big West Conference standings.

The Rainbow Wahine (9-8, 8-4) extended their win streak over Cal Poly to nine games with the win in the first game but had it snapped in the second contest. The Mustangs (9-14, 3-9) ended their current losing streak on the season that climbed to eight games, with the game two win.

The series solidified UH as the No. 3 team in the conference standings, sitting behind undefeated Cal State Fullerton and a one-loss Long Beach State squad. The 'Bows will host UC Riverside on April 16th and 17th for a three-game series at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. The Highlanders are currently ranked near the bottom of the conference standings at No. 8.

Game 1

The first game of the day was very different from the day before, where UH unloaded for 21 runs over two games, with a 1-0 victory claiming a Big West Conference sweep over Cal Poly.

The only offense in the matchup occurred in the first inning with the first two batters. Junior center fielder Brittnee Rossi recorded a single back to the pitcher, leading off the game. Moments later, Rossi stole second to put her in a scoring position. Freshman catcher Ka'ena Keliinoi put the lone run on the board by sending a double to left-center, scoring Rossi.

As UH led 1-0, freshman pitcher Jetta Nannen proceeded to put on a clinic from the circle. The Mustangs picked up their first hit in the third, but hits were few and far between as Nannen allowed four over her seven completed innings.

Nannen and company breezed through the first six innings without much of a threat, but the seventh became a little more interesting as Cal Poly loaded the base with one out. Nannen struck out her sixth batter of the game for the second out and forced a fly out to left field to end the game.

Keliinoi recorded her third multi-hit game of the season as she went 2-for-4. Not to be outdone was the hot-hitting senior left fielder Bree Soma as she went a perfect 3-for-3 with three singles.

Game 2

The 'Bows' start mirrored their first game with a 1-0 lead after the top of the first, following Kaupe knocking in Rossi on a sacrifice fly. The lead grew to 2-0 after a defensive miscue by the Mustangs in the fourth.

In the bottom half of the fourth, the stagnate Cal Poly offense came alive with a four-spot, chasing junior starting pitcher Ashley Murphy from the game for a 4-2 advantage. UH pulled back even after another RBI from Kaupe, this one on a single up the middle, scoring Ramos. Kaupe later scored on a fielding error, bringing the game to a 4-4 score.

The Mustangs took their second lead of the game in the fifth. Still, sophomore first baseman Dallas Millwood came up big in the seventh, singling up the middle, driving in freshman second baseman Maya Nakamura after her lead-off double.

The game ended up in favor of the Mustangs, as they load the bases on senior reliever Emily Klee in the bottom of the seventh. Walking off with a single to centerfield for the 6-5 final.

UH recorded 10 or more hits from its lineup for the fourth time in five games, as Ramos notched two hits to lead the 'Bows. Both Murphy and Klee pitched three innings, with Murphy allowing four earned runs and Klee letting one earned run across the plate. Klee picked up the loss, moving her record to 1-1 on the year.
