Men’s Volleyball Sweeps Series With UC San Diego

HONOLULU – The top-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team made it a clean sweep of UC San Diego with a straight-set victory Saturday night in a Big West Conference match-up at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. Set scores were 25-15, 25-19, 25-21.

The Rainbow Warriors (9-0, 4-0 BWC) won all four matches over the Tritons this season – twice in La Jolla, Calif., last month and the past two nights at "The Stan" – to extend their win streak over the Tritons to 17 straight. Unlike the previous night, in which UCSD took a set off the Warriors, UH was dominant from the start the finish.

Opposite Rado Parapunov reached double figures in kills for the ninth time this season with a team-high 12, hitting .526 while outside hitter Colton Cowell added 11 kills at a .391 clip. Setter Jakob Thelle finished with a career-high seven kills on nine attempts and quarterbacked an offense that hit .448 for the match.

Middle blocker Patrick Gasman rebounded from an off night on Friday and finished with seven kills and four blocks and served UH's only ace of the night. Outside hitter Chaz Galloway had nine kills on .400 hitting.
For the second straight night, the Tritons (1-7, 1-3) were led by Kyle McCauley, who had a team-high 11 kills. UCSD hit .212 for the match.

The Warriors took advantage of three Triton attack errors early in Set 1 during a 6-0 run for a 10-4 lead. A Gasman-Parapunov double block made it 14-7 and it was never close the rest of the set. UH hit .481 for the set and Cowell was six for nine in kill attempts.

UH surged ahead again early on in Set 2 scoring five straight points to jump out to a 10-6 lead. The Tritons got as close as three before consecutive kills by Galloway gave the Warriors a 23-17 cushion. Gasman's ace closed out the set.

A six-point run early in Set 3 put UH on top 7-2 and it was over from there. A block and kill by Gasman on consecutive plays made it 22-16 and moments later, the Tritons served into the set to end the match.

The Warriors continue their homestand by hosting Long Beach State, April 2-3 at SimpliFi Arena. First serve is 7:00 p.m. both nights.
