SAN LUIS OBISPO, CALIF.— The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team picked up its first road win of the season by taking down Cal Poly 66-60 Saturday afternoon at the Mott Athletics Center.
Leading 55-47 in the fourth following the third quarter where the Rainbow Wahine (4-5, 3-4) went 8-of-10 from the floor, the Mustangs (8-6, 4-3) put together a 10-0 run for a 57-55 advantage.
Sophomore forward
Kasey Neubert and freshman point guard
Kelsie Imai hit back-to-back layups to regain the lead with 1:25 on the clock. Abby Ellis, the Big West Conference-leading scorer, answered with a three from the top of the key as the Mustangs took the lead by a nose, 60-59.
Senior forward
Amy Atwell stepped up when she needed to, scoring all 14 of her points in the second half, but none bigger than with under a minute left on the clock. Atwell hit a jumper and was fouled, adding a free throw on to her bucket for the 62-60 lead and 41 seconds left to play.
Freshman forward
Daejah Phillips played smothering man-to-man defense on a Gianna Silvestri three-point attempt from the corner, forcing a miss and a game-high eighth rebound for Neubert. After an outlet pass to Phillips and a foul, the Las Vegas, Nevada native drained two free throws to close the game. Senior guard
Jadynn Alexander added two more from the charity stripe for some insurance, putting an end to a six-game road losing streak for the 'Bows.
Alexander finished with a team-high 16 points as she went 4-of-6 from three-point territory and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Phillips worked her way to double-digit scoring for the first time in five games with 15 points while adding four rebounds and two assists.
As a team, UH did not match their three-point output from the day before with 15 made three-points, but the 'Bows hit 9-of-28 for 32% while doing work at the free-throw line by going 15-of-20 for 75%. The Mustangs won the glass battle with a plus-five advantage, including 12 offensive boards, but only six second-chance points. UH kept the turnovers down to 14, only giving up 13 points off turnovers.
The 'Bows will stay on the road for their next set of games scheduled for February 12th and 13th at UC Santa Barbara. UH will not play a home game throughout February, continuing a six game conference road trip.
