NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team fell victim to a massive CSUN rally in an 88-80 overtime setback Saturday at the Matadome. The Rainbow Warriors dropped to 8-8 overall and 6-8 in the Big West with its second overtime loss in its last three games.
In Fridays' win, UH withstood a furious Matador rally. On this night they could not. UH led by 23 points in the first half and by as many as 15 points with 11 minutes left in regulation. But CSUN (8-9, 4-6 Big West) came all the way back to deny UH its first road sweep of the season.
Darius Brown put together a triple double with 18 points, 16 rebounds and 10 assists to lead the Matadors who also got a game-high 28 points from TJ Starks.
Casdon Jardine nearly had a double-double with 22 points and nine rebounds while draining four three-pointers, but it wasn't enough.
Noel Coleman and
Biwali Bayles set career-high with 15 points a piece, while Bayles added a career-high six assists.
Junior Madut chipped in 11 points.
UH lost despite never trailing in regulation and draining a season-high 13 three-pointers. The Matadors matched that number as the teams combined for 26 three-pointers in all.
Just like Friday UH got off to a blazing start and built a double-digit lead barely five minutes into the game. UH hit 11 of its first 16 shots and five of its first seven three-point attempts and at one point led 37-14 midway through the first half. The Matadors however ended the first half on an 18-2 run to make it a 39-32 UH lead at the break.
UH responded strong in the second half and held a 63-48 lead on a
Beon Riley free throw with 11:18 left in regulation. But the Matadors came storming back and tied the game, 75-75, on a Brown bucket with 1:54 left. Neither team would score for the remainder of regulation.
Amound Anderson gave the Matadors its first lead of the game on a three-pointer 38 seconds into overtime and CSUN never looked back as the Matadors out-scored UH 13-5 in the extra frame.
The Rainbow Warriors return to Hawai'i for their final homestand of the season as UH will host Long Beach State on Feb. 26 and 27 at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
