Women's Volleyball Sweeps at Cal Poly for Ninth-Straight Win

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team (20-6, 17-1 Big West) overcame a hot start by Cal Poly (13-15, 11-7 BWC) to sweep the Mustangs on the road, 25-22, 25-18, 25-20 on Saturday night at the Mott Athletics Center. Hawai'i extended its win-streak to a season-best nine-straight wins, while snapping a three-match losing streak in San Luis Obispo dating back to 2017. Tonight's win marked UH's sixth sweep in the last eight matches and with the win, the Rainbow Wahine claim at least a share of the Big West title as they are two games ahead of UC Santa Barbara with two games left in the season.

Outside hitter Riley Wagoner recorded a match-high 12 kills to notch her ninth double-digit kill match of the season. It is the fifth time in the last seven matches that she has had 10 or more kills. Middle blocker Amber Igiede added 10 kills and was in on a match-high seven blocks. She hit .381 for the night with just two errors in 21 attacks.  Outside hitter Tiffany Westerberg tied her season-high with seven kills while posting two blocks and a dig.

Setter Kate Lang issued a match-high 34 assists and was a dig shy of recording a double-double. She also added two blocks. Libero Tayli Ikenaga led the defense with 14 digs to mark her team-leading 16th double-digit dig match of the season. She also contributed with four assists and a service ace.

The Mustangs jumped out to a quick five point lead to start the match. Their run was highlighted by three-straight CP blocks which gave Cal Poly a 6-1 lead. Cal Poly led 8-2 lead before the two teams traded 11-consecutive sideouts. UH was able to finally get a natural point to trail 9-13. Later, a 5-to-0 UH scoring run erased their deficit behind the serving of Janelle Gong as UH tied things up at 14-14. The Rainbow Wahine took their first lead of the match at 16-15 on a Wagoner service ace. With UH leading 17-15. The Mustangs scored two quick points to tie the score at 17-17. Later, UH led by three at 23-20, but the Mustangs would respond with a pair of kills to trail by just one point, 23-22. The 'Bows then got kills from Westerberg and  Igiede to end the set with a 25-22. Westerber and Igiede had five kills apiece in the first set. Both players had no errors to hit for a combined .625 hitting percentage.

The Rainbow Wahine scored three consecutive points to take an early 7-4 lead on back-to-back blocks. Later, a 4-to-0 run with Wagoner serving extended UH's lead to 17-10 which caused a Cal Poly timeout to be called. Hawai'i would keep the Mustangs at bay, as Van Sickle put down her fifth kill of the match and fourth of the set to give UH a 25-18 Set 2 win to go up 2-0 in sets.

Just as in the first set, Cal Poly took an early 4-1 lead to start the third. A 9-to-2 UH run propelled the 'Bows to 10-6 lead at which point the Mustangs took their first timeout. Coming out of the timeout, UH kept things rolling as they doubled up on CP at 12-6 via a five-point run with Gong serving. Cal Poly would not back down, as they scored five-straight points to trail by just two at 16-14. The Mustangs would rally for a 9-to-2 run to tie the score at 18-18. UH would not give up the lead after that as they ended the match on a 7-to-2 scoring run, which included the final four-straight points, capped by a block solo by Igiede.

On Cal Poly's Senior Night, the Mustangs were led by Tommi Stockham's nine kills; Meredith Phillips' six blocks; Peyton Dueck's match-high 15 digs; and Avalon DeNecochea's 28 assists.

Hawai'i out-hit Cal Poly, 42-to-34 in kills and .252-to-.142 in hitting percentage. On defense the 'Bows out blocked the Mustangs, 10-to-8 while edging them out in digs, 42-to-41.

Next up, the Rainbow Wahine will return home for their final homestand of the season. On Friday, Nov. 26 UH will take on CSUN at 7:00 p.m. Hawai'i will battle UC Santa Barbara on Senior Night and will honor Janelle Gong, Brooke Van Sickle and Skyler Williams on Saturday, Nov. 27 at 7:00 p.m.. Both matches will be played at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
