Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Atwell Goes for Career-High 30 Points in Loss to Portland

Honolulu - The University of Hawai'i Women's Basketball team dropped their first game of the Bank of Hawaii classic to the University of Portland with a final of 91-77 inside SimpliFi Arean at Stan Sheriff Center Friday evening.

The Rainbow Wahine (0-3, 0-0) dropped their third consecutive game to begin the season. The last time UH lost three straight games to start the season was in 2018-2019. The Pilots (3-1, 0-0) only loss of the season came at the hands of number seven ranked Stanford and have won three of four to begin the year.

UH began the game shot for shot before finding adversity at the end of the first, being outscored 25-18. Down by 10 in the second quarter, UH flipped the switch and went on an 8-0 run to cut the Pilot lead down to two. The last five minutes of the second quarter were a back and forth battle with four lead changes before a last-second three-pointer would put the Bows down by two going into halftime at 43-41. Free throws made the difference in the first half, where the Bows converted 11 of their 15 from the charity stripe, where Portland only had three made on six attempts.

The teeter-totter matchup continued in the second half with multiple lead changes and a 60-60 tie going into the fourth quarter. Turnovers played a role in the loss as Portland forced 17 turnovers, resulting in 22 points.

Senior forward Amy Atwell had a career-high 30 points and hauled in five rebounds to go with it. Freshman guard Olivia Davies had her first double-digit scoring game of the season with 10 points and three assists.

Points in the paint and second-chance points told the story of the night. Portland converted 25 second-chance points compared to the Bows 15. Portland dominated the paint with 50 points to the 28 from the Bows.

UH will have a rest day before returning Sunday night against Portland State, marking the first matchup in over a decade between the two programs. Tipoff is set for 5:00 PM HT.
