KA'ANAPALI, Maui – University of Hawai'i senior
Kanata Irei carded a 3-under 68 and is tied for 13
th to lead the University of Hawai'i men's golf team's "B" team in the first round of the Kā'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational Friday at the Royal Kā'anapali Course.
The Okinawa, Japan native posted five birdies, including four in a five-hole stretch, for low round honors among UH's two teams. The 68 marks the low round of Irei's career at Hawai'i, eclipsing the 69 he posted in the first round of the 2019 Kā'anapali Classic.
The "B" team currently sits in 12
th place at 6-over 290, three strokes ahead of the "A" squad, who is 13
th at 292.
Boise State and Kansas sit atop the team leaderboard at 16-under 268 followed by Colorado (271), Loyola Md. (273), and Nevada (276). Individually, BSU's Hugo Townsend has a one-stroke lead after a 7-under 64.
Freshman
Tyler Ogawa led the "A" squad with a 1-under 70 and is tied for 30
th. The Honolulu native was even par at the turn before posting consecutive birdies on Nos. 10 and 11.
Matt Lloyd shot even par 71 and is tied for 36
