FULLERTON, CALIF.— The University of Hawai'i soccer team fell in a heartbreaker on the road at Titan Stadium, Sunday afternoon, 1-0 in overtime to Cal State Fullerton.
The Rainbow Wahine (0-8-3, 0-4-2) played extra time for the third consecutive match, which the program had not done since 2008. The Titans (6-9, 3-3) have won back-to-back matches and improved their historical record against UH to 13-2-1.
The 'Bows played aggressively in the first half, attacking the Titans' defensive efforts with seven shots and three corner kicks. On the other side of the field, the UH backline continued to be stingy, keeping the Titans to just three shots in the first 45 minutes.
The action stayed consistent between the two squads in the second half as UH was plus one in shots at 3-2. But overtime proved to be different as CSF shot a corner kick from the far side into a waiting deflection. Karla Rodriguez chipped a shot over sophomore goalkeeper
Lauren Marquez for the game-winning goal.
Contributing to the UH attack was sophomore forward
Kelci Sumida, accumulating four shots on the day, including three on goal. UH outshoot CSF 10-7 and had the upper hand in corners as well, 6-4.
UH will return home for a Thursday matchup with UC Irvine, scheduled for 7:00 p.m. HT. It'll be the only match for the 'Bows in the week after playing three consecutive weeks of two conference encounters. UH, and UCI have split their last two matches, including a 3-0 win for the 'Bows in 2019.
