Second Half Comeback at CSU Bakersfield Falls Short for Rainbow Wahine

BAKERSFIELD, CALIF.-- The University of Hawai'i women's basketball team came up short in its Big West Conference opener, falling to CSU Bakersfield 64-57 Friday afternoon at the Icardo Center.

The Rainbow Wahine (1-2, 0-1) dropped their fifth straight conference opener, dating back to the 2016-17 season. The last time the 'Bows won a conference opener was during the 2015-16 season when they won the conference championship. The Roadrunners (3-4, 1-0) picked up their first-ever Big West Conference win as a conference member.

The Runners lived up to their namesake by jumping out to a fast start with a 10-0 run in the first six minutes of action. UH battled in the opening quarter, hitting three-of-seven from three-point territory, ending the quarter trailing 20-11.

On the back of Lexus Green, the Runners kept the 'Bows at bay, building on their lead in the second quarter for a 35-18 lead at the end of the first two frames. Green, the Runners's leading scorer on the season at 12 points a game, accumulated 11 points in the first 20 minutes, including hitting three-of-five from long distance.

The second half told a different tale for UH offensively as the 'Bows battled back to pull within four in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter. A 14-4 run in the final frame gave the 'Bows a fighting chance, but the Runners never let go of the lead, closing out the comeback effort, 64-57.

Senior guard Jadynn Alexander led the 'Bows with 12 points, hitting three-of-five from three-point range, playing a significant role in the second-half comeback. Freshman guard Daejah Phillips added 11 points of her own, as well as a team-high five rebounds. Along with Alexander, Phillips kick-started the offense in the third and fourth quarters, scoring nine of her 11 points in the final 20 minutes.

The slow start by UH led to a deep hole to dig out of, but the miscues made it more difficult as the 'Bows tallied 17 turnovers, resulting in 26 points off turnovers for the Runners. Capitalizing on the offensive onslaught by the home team was Green. She finished with a game-high 19 points, including two significant three-pointers in the final two minutes of regulation.

UH, and CSUB will wrap up their weekend series, with the second game scheduled for 2 p.m. HT on Saturday.
