Softball Falls Twice On Day 3 Of Outrigger Malihini Kipa Aloha Tourney

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (9-13, 0-0 Big West) fell twice on Day 4 of the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament. Nevada shut out Hawai'i in the first game, 4-0 and in the nightcap, SeattleU edged out the Rainbow Wahine, 4-3 on Satruday at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
 
Nevada 4, Hawai'i 0
 
The Wolf Pack loaded the bases with one out in the first inning on a double, a walk and an error with a strikeout in between. A grounder to second pushed Sadaria McAlister across the plate for the 1-0 lead.
 
Nevada added another run in the second. Charli McLendon drew a one out walk and after a flyout to center, Mcalister got a hit up the middle  to put runners on first and second. Sierra Mello then hit the ball off the centerfield wall to drive in Mclendon. But on the play, UH's centerfielder Brittnee Rossi gunned out Mcalister at the plate trying to score from first.
 
Nevada's Mcalister led off the fourth inning with a solo home run to left to extend their lead to 3-0.
 
Hawai'i's first two batters in the fourth were both plunked. Ka'ena Keliinoi then hit into fielder's choice that erased pinch runner Cira Bartolotti at second. With runners at the corners, UH attempted a double steal. But Heen got caught in a rundown and was thrown out 2-4-5-2.
 
The Wolf Pack added another run in the sixth. With the bases loaded, a slow roller was hit to second, but on the flip to first, the ball was dropped at first which allowed another run to score. But the 'Bows escaped further damage on a line-out double play from Kaupe to Maya Nakamura which double up the runner at second to get out of the inning.
 
Hawai'i's Ashley Murphy suffered the loss to drop her record to 4-5. She gave up four runs on nine hits with five walks and four strikeouts in six innings. Klee came in relief and got the final three outs allowing just one hit in relief in the final inning.
 
Nevada's Kendall Fritz earned the complete game win. She allowed just one hit and shut out the 'Bows for the first time this season. She recorded three walks and five strikeouts.
 
Seattle 4, Hawai'i 3
 
Hawaii got on the scoreboard first, posting a run in the bottom of the first. With runners at second and third Nakamura ripped a single to the shortstop who tried to block it and make a throw, but Nakamura beat out the throw to first which allowed Rossi to score.
 
The Redhawks took the lead in the fourth, scoring three runs. Seattle got a two-run single by B Thompson followed by a sacrifice fly hit by S Merwin to score Thompson from third.
 
Seattle loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fifth. Reliever Emily Klee made her second appearance of the day. Carly Nance lifted a sacrifice fly to left to
 
Gandia-Mak got a two-out single in the sixth and pinch hitter Merilis "Mama" Rivera then blasted her first career home run to left field. It also marked Rivera's first hit of the season. Hawai'i cut their deficit to 4-3.
 
After retiring the Redhawks in order in the top of the seventh. UH's top of the order was due up in the bottom of the seventh. After a flyout to left, Nawai Kaupe was hit by the pitch. The Redhawks got a strikeout and then Heen stepped to the plate with two outs and represented the winning run. She almost launched a walkoff homer, but instead it came up just short on the centerfield warning track.
 
Jetta Nannen dropped to 1-2 on the season suffering the loss in her second start of her career. She allowed four runs on five hits with three walks in 5.1 innings. With the defense behind her, she was able to get out of some jams during the game. Klee made her second appearance of the day and was solid, facing all five batters that she faced.
 
Seattle's Stefanie Madrigal earned the win, throwing the first four innings. She allowed just one run on two hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Nance threw the next two innings giving up two runs on three hits. Shi Smith picked up her third save of the season, shutting down UH in the final inning to preserve the 4-3 win.
 
The Rainbow Wahine conclude the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament on Sunday with a rematch against Seattle at 12:00 p.m. at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
