The Rainbow Warriors shot a 304 and is three strokes behind No. 14 North Carolina and No. 28 California (301). Three-time Burns team champion Brigham Young and UNC Wilmington are tied for the lead at 1-under 287 followed while Texas A&M is one stroke back at even par 288.
A group of six golfers are tied atop the individual leaderboard at 3-under 69 including defending medalist Peter Kuest of BYU and Texas A&M teammates
Sam Bennett and Josh Gliege, the latter of which is playing as an individual. The teams battled intermittent rain and gusty winds throughout the day, which saw only two teams and 22 individuals shoot under par in a field 21 teams and 124 golfers.
After starting the day 4-over after five holes, freshman
Kotaro Murata settled down and went 3-under over five hole stretch and finished at 2-over 74. Fellow Japan native Katana Irei also carded 73 and both are tied for 38
thplace. Junior
Justin Arcano shot 77 while seniors
Nick Nelson and
Trevor Hirata posted 79 and 85, respectively.
Three UH golfers are competing as individuals – junior
Cole Yoshida (77), sophomore A.J. Teraoka (83), and junior
Justin Ngan (85). Junior
Matt Lloyd was forced to withdraw due to illness.
Round 2 is scheduled for Friday with an 8:00 a.m. HT shotgun start.
