STANFORD, Calif. – The top-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team extended its set win streak to 23 with another sweep of No. 11 Stanford Saturday in the series finale at Burnham Pavilion. Set scores were 25-23, 25-13, 25-20.
The Rainbow Warriors (14-0) remained perfect on the season and won in straight sets for the seventh consecutive match. UH posted its first sweep of Stanford since 2006 and won for the sixth straight time over its former conference rival.
Despite hitting for a season-low .247, Hawai'i recorded seven aces and eight blocks while limiting the Cardinal to .099 hitting. Outside hitter
Colton Cowell did not commit an attack error in 18 swings with 11 kills, hitting at a .611 clip. The Makawao, Maui native also served three aces.
Opposite
Rado Parapunov tallied 11 kills and three blocks while middle blocker
Guilherme Voss added five kills and five blocks.
UH has dropped only two sets all season and has won 12 of its 14 matches in straight sets.
For the second straight night, Jaylen Jasper led the Cardinal (5-7) in kills, finishing with 11 on just .029 hitting.
UH gained separation in Set 1, scoring four unanswered for a 14-10 lead. After the Warriors went ahead 19-14, Stanford answered back with five straight to tie it at 19. The teams traded side-outs until Eric Beatty hit wide giving UH set point at 24-22. After a Cardinal kill, Cowell ended it with his sixth kill.
It was all Hawai'i in Set 2. Four Cardinal hitting errors gave the Warriors an early five-point lead. The score was 17-8 after the Warriors scored four unanswered. UH recorded four aces in the set, including two each by Cowell and
Patrick Gasman.
The Warriors led from start to finish in Set 3. The lead was 7-4 after Parapunov's ace and 14-9 following a 4-0 run. The Cardinal got within two but UH pulled away as a kill by Voss made it 20-15. With the pro-Hawai'i crowd on their feet,
Filip Humler slammed home his fourth kill to end the match.
The Warriors will take the next week off before hosting a two-match exhibition series with Nittaidai of Japan, Feb. 26 and 28 at the Stan Sheriff Center.
