Warriors Hand Wolf Pack First Loss In 24-21 Victory

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i football team got back on track with a 24-21 win over previously undefeated Nevada Saturday night at Aloha Stadium. UH improved to 3-3 while snapping a two-game skid.

The Wolf Pack (5-1) entered the game atop the Mountain West standings and sporting one of the top passing attacks in the country. It didn't matter to a hungry Rainbow Warrior squad that handed Nevada its first loss while limiting the nation's leading receiver Romeo Doubs to one catch for 10 yards. UH also held quarterback Carson Strong to nearly 200 yards under his average.

The win was UH's second straight over the Wolf Pack.  It marked the first time that Hawai'i beat Nevada in consecutive years since winning three straight from 2006-08 and the victory was the closest margin by either team in the last 13 meetings.

Calvin Turner scored his team-leading eighth touchdown on the year on a 7-yard catch in the final minute of the first half giving the Warriors a 10-7 halftime lead. Turner has scored in five of UH's six contests, including in each of the last four games. The Savannah, Ga., native totaled 152 all-purpose yards, which included a career-high 10 catches for 77 yards. He also rushed twice for 28 yards and had a key 47-yard kickoff return after the Wolf Pack closed to within 24-21 with five and half minutes left.

After a scoreless first quarter, the teams proceeded to grind out a trio of long drives. The Rainbow Warriors got on the board first after an 80-yard drive netted into a 31-yard Matthew Shipley field goal. The Wolf Pack responded with a 13-play, 81-yard drive capped by a Cole Turner touchdown pass. On the ensuing possession, Hawai'i took back the lead with a seven-yard touchdown from Chevan Cordeiro to Turner.

Cordeiro threw for 246 yards on 26-of-32 passing, including completing his first eight attempts. The Honolulu native also rushed 15 times for 62 yards and his two-yard touchdown run with 9:31 left put the Warriors up by 10. Cordeiro also directed a 99-yard scoring drive, which resulted in a four-yard Miles Reed touchdown to open the second half scoring.

Hawai'i converted 9-of-14 on third down attempts. Four of Melquise Stovall's five catches extended UH drives and he also instigated a 15-yard facemask penalty on third down during the 99-yard drive. All four of UH's scoring drives went for 75 yards or longer.

After the Wolf Pack closed to within 24-21 after an 18-yard touchdown by Tory Horton, the Warriors held on to the ball and ran out the clock. Turner's long kickoff return gave UH the ball in Nevada territory. He had two catches in that final drive that resulted in first downs including a 9-yard reception on 4th and 6.

UH is scheduled to play another undefeated team San Jose State (4-0) next Saturday, Dec. 5 in California, but due to impending county orders, the site of the game is to be determined.
