HONOLULU – University of Hawai'i men's golf head coach
Ronn Miyashiro added a pair of signees for the 2021-22 season with the addition of Astuya Oishi of Hiroshima, Japan and Jake Sequin of Honolulu.
"These past eight months have definitely been a challenge for the incoming fall class of 2021," Miyashiro said. "Not only having to try and stay healthy and COVID free, but also being forced to online education, and having their school golf seasons cancelled last spring. Through all of it, I am so glad that we were able to secure the additions of Jake and Astuya to our Rainbow Warrior Golf Family."
Oishi is a 2019 graduate of Club Med Academies in Port Saint Lucie, Fla. He finished with a No. 357 national ranking in the Junior Golf Scoreboard in 2019, which included two Top 10 finishes in Florida State Golf Association tournaments. Oishi also was a Florida State qualifier for the USGA Junior Boys Championship. In 2018, he recorded Top 10 finishes in a pair of South Florida Junior Golf Association tournaments including medalist honors at Indian Springs.
"Atsuya has been through a lot since graduating from high school last calendar year," Miyashiro said. "He was going to take a few months after graduation to improve his English and test scores and join us mid-year this season. Then COVID hit and questions arose about being able to get him admitted to UH. At that time he had no obligation to keep his commitment to play for us. He had other offers from schools that were going to admit him immediately.
"Through all of the adversity, he kept his commitment and we are not only grateful for his patients but excited to have him part of our UH family. Atsuya continues our connection of players from Japan who I look to be ready to contribute immediately. His resume coming in includes an extensive amount of tournament experience both in the U.S. and internationally, including qualifying for the 2019 USGA Boys National Championship out of the state of Florida, which is historically one of the hardest states to qualify out of every year. We can't wait to have him make the quick transition to Division I golf and add his talents to our roster."
Sequin will graduate this spring from Mid-Pacific Institute in Honolulu. In 2019, he won the Hawai'i High School Athletic Association boys individual title with a two-stroke win at the Waikoloa Kings Course. That year, Sequin posted a No. 507 junior golf national ranking, which included a win at the Army Invitational, Maui Classic, and Mix Team Championship. This year, he participated in the Governor John A. Burns Challenge Cup.
"Jake had shown strong interest in our golf program for a few years prior to us being officially allowed to recruit him," Miyashiro said. "He definitely had it in his mind that he wanted to stay home and be a Rainbow Warrior. Through the last three years we have been able to see his rise as one of the best players to come out of Hawai'i in this class, all culminating in winning the HHSAA Boys Golf State Championship in 2019. Hopefully he will be able to defend that championship this spring. His 2019 year continued to be successful by winning the Army Invitational prior to the COVID lockdown. We look forward to having him continue his great play and parlay that into a successful freshman campaign in 2021."
