HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i at Mānoa continued to hold steady in the latest Graduation Success Rate (GSR), which measures graduation rates of student-athletes who began enrollment during the 2013-14 academic year and graduated within six years.
UHM student-athletes posted a score of 85 percent, which fell one point from last year's all-time high of 86. Hawai'i has scored 85 or better in each of the past four reporting cycles. The Division I national average reached an all-time high of 88.
Among its peers, UHM tied for fifth along with UC Irvine among schools in the Big West Conference behind UC Davis (92), Long Beach State (91), UC Santa Barbara (87), and Cal Poly (86). Among the Mountain West schools in the sport of football, UHM scored a 71, which ranked eighth.
Five UHM sports earned perfect GSR scores and eight programs posted scores higher or equal to their respective sports' national average – baseball (92; national average: 84), men's golf (100; 89); men's tennis (100; 92), women's basketball (92; 91), cross country/track and field (100; 91), women's golf (100; 95), women's tennis (100; 95), and softball (92; 92). Sailing, a non-NCAA sport, also scored a perfect 100.
The Division I Board of Directors created the GSR in a 2002 response to Division I college and university presidents who wanted data that more accurately reflected the mobility of college students beyond what the federal graduation rate. The GSR formula removes from the rate student-athletes who leave school while academically eligible and includes student-athletes who transfer to a school after initially enrolling elsewhere. This calculation makes it a more complete and accurate look at student-athlete success. UH's score has risen from its initial rate of 60 percent in 2004-05 to 83 percent in 2015-16.
