Brookings, S.D.—The road trip through North Dakota and South Dakota came to an end on Tuesday for the University of Hawai'i soccer team, dropping the final match of the swing, 1-0 to South Dakota State.
The Rainbow Wahine (2-4-1) went a combined 1-2 over the three matches, with their lone win coming in the first match of the trip at North Dakota State on Friday, Sept. 6. The Jackrabbits (3-3) snapped a three-match losing streak with the victory.
For the sixth consecutive match, the 'Bows' defense was stingy and didn't allow a goal in the first half. But a late score was the deciding factor.
In the 84th minute, Leah Manuleleua broke free and attacked the right side of the box. She connected on a right-footed bouncer past senior goalkeeper
Alexis Mata into the left corner of the net, giving SDSU the lead.
The UH attack tallied five shots on the day, compared to the Jackrabbits 14. Mata notched six saves in the effort as she weathered the attack with seven shots on goal.
UH will use a nine-day hiatus to rest and regroup for the Rainbow Wahine Shutout, scheduled for Friday, Sept. 19 and Sunday, Sept. 22. Matchups with Power-5 opponents, Washington State, and UCLA will be the last nonconference foes for the 'Bows. The Big West Conference schedule is set to start on Oct. 3 at home against CSUN.
