Hawai‘i Records Second Straight Shutout with 0-0 Tie of Sacramento State

Honolulu—A total of 110 minutes wasn't enough on Saturday as the University of Hawai'i soccer team played to a 0-0 tie with Sacramento State at the grass practice field on Lower Campus Rd.

The Rainbow Wahine (1-2-1) wrapped up a four-match, nine-day stretch to begin the 2019 campaign completing the Outrigger Soccer Kickoff and Rainbow Wahine Soccer Invitational. The Hornets (1-1-1) will wrap up their trip to O'ahu with a match against Nevada on Monday.

"We've learned we are a very tough bunch," said head coach Michele Nagamine. "We have a very physical team, and I'm proud of them. I think our future is bright; we just need time to pull it all together."

The toughness played a role in the last two matches, as UH played in back-to-back-to-back overtime matches, holding two of those three to shutouts. Anchored by senior Alexis Mata, the backline of junior Cristina Drossos, along with sophomores Natalie Dixon, Natalie Daub, and Elena Palacios proved to be too much for Nevada and Sacramento State. Junior Sadie Lutz, and the freshman pair of Loren House and Emily Cotrell providing stellar play off the bench.

While the UH attack didn't account for goals, the offense still presented problems accounting for 15 shots and five corner kicks against the Hornets. Kelci Sumida, the hero from Thursday, accumulated four shots, with three on goal, but couldn't find the back of the net.

The 'Bows will now prepare for their first road trip of the season with three matches over five days. The first of three will be at North Dakota State on Friday, Sept. 6th, followed by stops at North Dakota and South Dakota State.
