The 2018-19 University of Hawai'i athletics season featured success from its student-athletes and teams both on the playing field and in the classroom. The year was highlighted by seven team and nine individual postseason appearances.
Post-season appearances (Team):
- The Rainbow Warrior football team qualified for the 2018 SoFi Hawaiʻi Bowl, its 12th all-time bowl appearance and second in three seasons under head coach Nick Rolovich.
- The women's volleyball team earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament for their 37th overall and 26th consecutive appearance.
- The Rainbow Wahine basketball team received an automatic bid into the Women's National Invitation Tournament after finishing as the Big West runner-up in the conference tournament.
- The beach volleyball team became one of just five teams to appear in all four NCAA tournaments.
- The coed sailing team advanced to its sixth ICSA Coed National Championships in the last seven years. It was UH's 18th all-time bid into the national championship.
- The women's water polo team earned the Big West's automatic bid into the NCAA tournament after winning the BWC Tournament. It marked the program's sixth NCAA Tournament appearance and first since 2015.
- The men's volleyball team earned the Big West's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament after capturing the 2019 BWC title. It was the Rainbow Warriors sixth NCAA Tournament appearance, and third in the last five years.
Post-season (Individual):
- Women's tennis' Petra Melounova earned a UH-record third appearance into the NCAA singles championship tournament. She became the first UH player to earn ITA All-America honors after winning her first and second rounds to advance to the NCAA Round of 16.
- Seven from the men's and three from the women's swimming and diving team competed at the NCAA Championships: Metin Aydin (100 & 200 Backstroke, 200 Individual Medley, 200 & 400 Medley Relay Teams), Olli Kokko (100 & 200 Breaststroke, 200 & 400 Medley Relay Teams), Kāne Follows (100 & 200 Backstroke, 200 Individual Medley), Franz Adam (200 & 400 Medley Relay Teams), Mateusz Chaba (200 & 400 Medley Relay Teams), Johan Sandell (Three-meter & Platform Dives), Phoebe Hines (200, 500, & 1650 Freestyle), Karolina Hajkova (100 & 200 Backstroke), Ivy Houser (Platform Dive).
- Two from the women's track and field squad competed in the NCAA West Preliminaries – Alexis Branzil (javelin) and Kristen LaCosse (44M hurdles).
Academically, Hawai'i's student-athletes were once again solid in the classroom as well...
- A total of 157 current and former student-athletes—38 in the fall and 119 in the spring—earned their degrees during the 2018-19 school year. (List of Winter Graduates | List of Spring Graduates)
- A total of 80 graduated from women's teams; 54 graduated from men's teams; and 23 earned their degrees on coed teams.
- 287 student-athletes were named UH scholar-athletes earning a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA or semester GPA of 3.0 or higher for Spring 2018, Fall 2018.
- 90 student-athletes earned "Scholar with Honors" for earning a 3.21-3.40 cumulative GPA.
- 115 student-athletes earned "Scholar with Highest Honors" awards for earning a 3.51 or higher cumulative GPA.
- UH posted its highest all-sport APR with a score of 981 out of 1,000, one-points higher than its previous high of 980 set last year.
- Eight teams posted single-year scores of 1,000 (men's basketball, men's golf, men's swimming/diving, men's tennis, men's volleyball, women's golf, soccer and women's swimming/diving). Women's golf achieved a perfect scores for the sixth consecutive year. The women's golf and soccer teams were recognized by the NCAA as being in the top 10 of their respective sports.
- Four UHM teams also attained or matched its program's highest-ever multiyear score – baseball (983), men's swimming and diving (980), women's golf (1,000), and women's soccer (1,000).
- Six teams recorded multiyear rates equal or higher than their sport's respective national averages – baseball (983; national average: 976), women's golf (1,000; 991), softball (986; 986), women's soccer (1,000; 989), women's tennis (992; 990), and women's track and field (988; 983).
- Individually, men's volleyball's Stijn van Tilburg and women's tennis' Petra Melounova were named the Big West's Scholar Athletes of the Year for UH.
- Noah Borden (football), Nina Bean (track & field) and Stijn van Tilburg all earned CoSIDA's Google Cloud Academic All-District honors.
- Thus far in conference, Hawai'i's student-athletes have garnered 51 All-Academic honors. (the Big West's winter & spring and Mountain West All-Academic Awards have not yet been announced)

Football
• Qualified for the 2018 SoFi Hawaiʻi Bowl, its 12

• Posted an overall winning record and recorded its most wins (8) for the first time since 2010.
• Received votes in both the Associated Press and Amway Coaches poll for the first time since 2011 after its best start (6-1) to the season since 2007.
• Wins over UNLV and Wyoming gave UH possession of the Island Showdown and Paniolo trophies, respectively. Hawai'i now owns all three of its rivalry trophies along with the Kuter Trophy (vs. Air Force).
• Ranked ninth nationally in passing offense (321.2 ypg), its highest average since 2010, behind quarterback Cole McDonald, who ranked among the nation's Top 10 in six categories.
• Wide receiver John Ursua, who led the nation in receiving touchdowns (16), was a finalist for Polynesian College Player of the Year and semifinalist for the Bilenikoff Award as well as first-team all-Mountain West.
• Senior Noah Borden was a semifinalist for the Wuerffel Trophy, awarded to the player who best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement. Borden also earned CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 honors.

• The Warriors had two players selected in the NFL Draft – linebacker Jahlani Tavai (2
nd round, Detroit) and receiver John Ursua (7
th round, Seattle).
Women's Soccer
• Ended the season at 9-7-1 overall record, and 4-4 record in the Big West—its best conference record since 2011 when the 'Bows went 4-2 in the WAC.
• UH was in the hunt to compete in its first Big West Conference tournament going into the last game of the season, but came up just short, falling to Cal State Fullerton, 2-1.
• Senior forward Raisa Strom-Okimoto became the first ever Rainbow Wahine to be named Big West Conference Offensive Player of the Year. She led the conference in goals scored with 12 and accounted for a shot on goal percentage of .582.
• Strom-Okimoto was also appointed to the All-Big West First Team, along with sophomore midfielder Leialoha Medeiros. Redshirt junior goalkeeper Alexis Mata earned honorable mention honors and defender Elena Palacios was named to the All-Freshman squad.
• The base of the team's success was set by it's freshman class. The 2019 roster was filled with young talent as eight of the 10 freshmen saw significant playing time throughout the season.
Women's Volleyball
• Earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament for the women's volleyball team's 37
th- overall and 26
th-consecutive post-season appearance.
• Finished the season with an overall record of 18-9, while finishing second in the Big West with a 14-2 mark.
• Four Rainbow Wahine earned all-Big West First Team honors—Reyn "Tita" Akiu, Natasha Burns, McKenna Granato, and Norene Iosia.
• In Hawai'i's NCAA First Round match vs. Baylor, senior libero Reyn "Tita" Akiu recorded a UH single-match (rally scoring) record with 34 digs to end her collegiate career. In her one year at UH, Akiu posted 465 total digs in 100 sets player to rank her at No. 4 in the UH-single season record book.
• Senior outside hitter McKenna Granato joined UH's elite 1,000 kill club and recorded her 700
th dig at Long Beach State (11/3/18). She ended her four-year career ranked No. 19 in the UH record books with 1,055 career kills. She led UH with 324 kills and 39 service aces in 2018.
• Junior setter/outside hitter Norene Iosia finished the season ranked No. 2 in the NCAA with five triple-doubles and an additional 15 double-doubles. Iosia saw her role double as an outside hitter in addition to her setting in UH's modified 6-2 offense. She finished the season second on the team with 212 kills, 477 assists, 301 digs, and 57 blocks.
Cross Country
• The 2018 cross country team ran in eight competitions on the season with five different top finishers.
• Sophomore Sienna Santiago consistently finished near the top for the Rainbow Wahine, turning in UH's best times at the Big Wave Invitational (19:38.0), Hawai'i Pacific Invite (19:55.5), Bronco Invitational (22:35.53) and Big West Championships (23:59.4).
• Santiago's 19:38.0 finish at the Big Wave Invitational was the best on the season for the Rainbow Wahine in a 5K, while Danielle Girard had the best 6K time of 22:31.6 at the UC Riverside Invitational.
• The 'Bows took ninth at the Big West Championships with 268 points.
• UH won the Big West Invitational for the first time since 2010.
• Competing at the NCAA West Regional for the fifth-consecutive season, the Rainbow Wahine earned 35th place.

Men's Basketball
• Finished with a winning record for the sixth time in the last seven years.
• Notched two wins over the Pac-12 in the same season for the first time in more than 40 years with victories over Utah and Colorado.
• Set a new single-season record for three-pointers made with 266, crushing the former record was 241 by the 2000-01 squad.
• Led the Big West in assists (15.4), three-pointers made (8.6), and assist-turnover ratio (1.3).
• The 'Bows average margin of victory in its nine Big West victories was 13.7 points, while its five Big West home wins came by an average of 18.4 points.
• Also led the Big West in attendance for the sixth straight season (5,527).
• Senior Jack Purchase earned all-Big West second team honors and left UH as the school's all-time leader in three-pointers made (199).
• Senior Brocke Stepteau sank a UH record 34 straight free throws and finished 11th nationally in free throw percentage at 88.9 percent, which also set a new UH single-season record.
Women's Basketball
• Finished the season at 15-17, while going 10-6 in Big West Conference play.
• Jumped from No. 5 to No. 2 in the conference standings by going 3-0 heading into the conference, earning a double bye paving the way to the championship game.
• Four student-athletes were honored by the conference for end of the season awards. Senior guard Tia Kanoa was named to All-Conference Second Team, senior guard • • Leah Salanoa and junior guard Courtney Middap were elected as honorable mentions, and Myrrah Joseph was appointed to the All-Freshman Team.
• For the 10th time in program history, UH made an appearance in national post season play with the Women's National Invitational Tournament. It was the program's first appearance since 2015, and fourth appearance in post-season play under head coach
Laura Beeman.
• The Rainbow Wahine were the only team in the conference to knock off eventual season and tournament champion UC Davis during the regular season. With the exception to UC Davis, the Bows were the only team to not be swept by a conference opponent this season.
Men's Swimming and Diving
• UH made history by notching its first-ever men's MPSF Championship.
• Junior Kāne Follows became the first All-American since 2003 when he finished seventh in the 200 backstroke.
• Junior Olli Kokko was named an Honorable Mention All-American finishing at No. 14 in the 100 breaststroke.
• UH claimed gold in nine separate events at the MPSF Championship, including seven different individual events.
• Senior diver Johan Sandell qualified for the NCAA Championship for third consecutive season.

Women's Swimming and Diving
• UH notched its third consecutive MPSF women's championship.
• Junior Phoebe Hines finished fifth overall at the NCAA Championship earning her first career All-America honor. It was the second consecutive year UH a swimmer named as an All-American.
• Sophomores Karolina Hajkova and Ivy Houser qualified for their first ever NCAA Championship appearance.
• UH claimed gold in 13 separate events at the MPSF Championship, including nine different individual events.
• Hines was named MPSF Female Swimmer of the Year. Houser was dubbed Female Diver of the Year. Dan Schemmel was selected as the MPSF Female's Coach of the Year. Head diving coach

• 12 different student-athletes were named to the MPSF All-Academic Team.
Baseball
- The Rainbow Warriors capped the 2019 campaign with a 20-30 record with an 8-16 Big West record to tie for seventh in the league standings.
- Senior shortstop Maaki Yamazaki, who hit .308 on the year, earned First Team All-Big West honors for the utility spot. It is the second-consecutive year he has earned First Team accolades, marking the first time a UH player has earned a spot on the conference First Team since Kolten Wong accomplished the feat in 2010 and 2011 when the 'Bows competed in the Western Athletic Conference.
- Freshman Scotty Scott took home Big West Freshman Field Player of the Year, the first major award since Dylan Thomas won Big West Freshman Pitcher of the Year in 2017. It's the first time UH field player has won Freshman of the Year since Kolten Wong's WAC Freshman of the Year award in 2009.
- Senior Ethan Lopez (third base) and redshirt junior Dylan Thomas (closing pitcher) were named Second Team All-Big West with Scotty Scott (outfield) and Alex Baeza (First Base) winning honorable mention.
- Redshirt sophomore Daylen Calicdan led all UH hitters with a .310 batting average.
- Redshirt junior closer Dylan Thomas ranked in the top 75 nationally for ERA (2.01), strikeout-to-walk ratio (4.54) and WHIP (0.99).
- Highlight wins including a 15-3 road victory at Big Ten Champion Ohio State, a 10-2 win over #19 UC Irvine in the Big West opener in addition to take two out of three from perennial Big West power Cal State Fullerton.
- Head coach Mike Trapasso earned his 500th career win in a 6-2 road victory at Cal Baptist on April 30. The 18th-year head coach has picked up all 500 of his wins as UH's skipper.
Beach Volleyball
- Earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament and became one of just five teams nationally to appear in all four NCAA tournaments.
- Placed fourth at the NCAAs, its fourth straight year as a top-four finisher.
- Finished with a 28-11 record, its third straight season with 25 or more wins.
- Emily Maglio and Amy Ozee were named AVCA All-America honorable mention. Maglio became the first UH player to earn All-America recognition three times.
- All five pairs earned All-Big West honors, while three received the AVCA Top Flight award.
- Pani Napoleon earned Big West Freshman of the Year honors, the fourth straight year a UH player took home the honor.
- Senior Ari Homayun concluded her career as the school's all-time leader in overall (118) and dual match wins (115).
- Morgan Martin and Pani Napoleon won their first 20 matches together and set a UH record with 40 straight sets won.
Men's Golf
- Posted its best finish at the Big West Conference Championship with a fifth place showing.
- Sophomore Justin Arcano tied for fifth place at the Big West Championship and earned honorable mention all-conference honors with a team-best 74.4 scoring average.
- UH played host to five tournaments, including two at Kaua'i's Wailua Golf Course during the spring season– John A. Burns Intercollegiate and Big West Championship – while also hosting the Amer Ari Invitational, considered one of the top collegiate tournaments of the season.
- During the fall season, Hawai'i hosted the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational on Kaua'i and the Kā'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational on Maui.
- Senior Cameron Kaneko was runner-up at the Duck Invitational finishing one-stroke back with a career-best 4-under 212 total.
Women's Golf
- UH's scoring average of 305.1 was the fourth-best in program history.
- Posted three Top 5 finishes including third place at the Ānuenue Spring Break Classic in Waikoloa, Hawai'i.
- Also tied for fourth at the Battle at the Rock and was fifth at the Rainbow Wahine Invitational.
- Junior Megan Ratcliffe led the team in four tournaments and had a team-best 76.0 scoring average.
- Senior Kaci Masuda capped a four-year career with included 100 career tournaments and a 76.4 scoring average
Coed Sailing
- Earned its 18th all-time bid and its sixth bid in the last seven years to the ICSA Coed National Championship in Newport, R.I.
- Placed 11th in the National Championship Eastern Semifinals, its best finish since 2015.
- Placed third at the PCCSC Coed Championships, to earn the bid to nationals.
- Captured the Peter Wenner Rainbow Invite for the fifth straight year.
- Also finished runner-up at the Stoney Burke Intersectional among a field of 25 teams.
- Placed three sailors on the all-PCCSC squad, including senior Michael Pacholski who earned his third straight spot as an all-conference skipper. Pacholski was also awarded the PCCSC Mikey Murison Sportsmanship Award.
Women's Sailing
- Finished fifth at the PCCSC Women's Championship, falling just one point short of qualifying for the ICSA Women's National Championship field.
- It marked just the second time in the last 12 years the team fell short of qualifying for nationals.
- Senior Annika Garrett concluded a solid four-year career by being named to the all-PCCSC Women's Team as a skipper.
- Hayden Lahr capped her freshman season by being named the PCCSC Women's Rookie of the Year.
Softball
- UH finished with a 33-16 overall record—its most wins since 2013. It was the 24th time that UH recorded at least 30 wins in a season. Hawai'i finished second in the Big West with a 14-7 conference record. It was UH's highest finish in the BWC since 2013
- Bob Coolen recorded his 1,000th win as the head coach of the Rainbow Wahine with an 8-1 win over UC Santa Barbara on April 13.
- As a team, finished the season ranked No. 1 in the Big West and No. 39 in the NCAA averaging 1.04 home runs per game.
- Overall, UH outscored its opponents 230-to-161, and 63-to-13 in the first inning alone. The 'Bows were 26-0 when allowing two or less runs in a game.
- Three Rainbow Wahine earned National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-West Region honors—Callee Heen (first team), Brittany Hitchccock (second team) and Nicole Lopez (second team)
- A total of eight players earned all-Big West honors, tying for the most players to earn Big West honors in one season (1994, 2013). First team: Callee Heen, Brittany Hitchcock, Nicole Lopez; Second team: Heather Cameron; Honorable mention: Cheeks Ramos, Brittnee Rossi; All-Freshman Team: Izzy Dino, Mikaela Gandia-Mak
Men's Tennis
- The Rainbow Warriors tennis team finished the 2019 season with a 7-12 overall record and a 1-4 mark in conference. It was the best record for the 'Bows since UH went 8-12 overall in 2014.
- Rookie Andre Ilagan became the first Rainbow Warrior to be named Big West Freshman of the Year and the fourth to garner conference Freshman of the Year honors as Sasha Heinemann (2006), Andreas Weber (2007) and Dennis Lajola (2008) all earned the award when UH was a member of the WAC.
- Ilagan recorded a team-high 12-7 dual match singles record, including a 10-7 record at the No. 1 spot. It was the most singles wins by UH's No. 1 player since Dennis Lajola compiled a 12-8 record at No. 1 in 2010. Ilagan began the spring with a win over Louisville's Christopher Morin-Kougoucheff, who finished 2018 ranked No. 117 in the ITA poll. Ilagan started red-hot right out of the gate as he won five of his first six matches as a Rainbow Warrior.
- Sophomore Lucas Labrunie earned a spot on the all-Big West Singles Second Team after tallying a 10-9 dual match record. He was 7-8 on the No. 2 court and 3-1 at No. 3. Overall he also notched double-digits in singles wins with an 11-10 overall record. He won five of his last eight singles matches to help lead UH to a 7-13 overall record--the most wins for UH since the 2014 team went 8-12.
- In doubles, Ilagan and Labrunie combined to earn second team all-Big West honors after posting a 6-6 dual match record together. UH's No. 2 doubles team of Blaz Seric and Simao Telo Alves also earned All-Big West second-team honors.
Women's Tennis
- The Raibnow Wahine recorded a 10-10 overall record in 2019 with a 5-2 Big West record during the regular season. The 'Bows hit their stride and finished strong in the second half of the season, reeling off seven-straight wins, before having its win-streak snapped in the Big West Championship match by Long Beach State.
- It was the fourth-straight season that Hawai'i advanced to the BWC championship match. UH had a 3-1 lead before The Beach battled their way back, winning the last three singles matches to capture the league title and the automatic bid into the NCAA tournament.
- Junior Petra Melounova became the first UH player (men's or women's) to earn ITA All-America honors. Melounova advanced to the NCAA Women's Singles Championship's Round of 16 to earn the honor after upsetting #60 Jessica Golovin (LSU) and #47 Chiara Lommer (Michigan) in the First and Second Rounds. She is the first UH player to advance to the Round of 16 and the first player from the Big West to do so since 1996 (UC Santa Barbara's Jean Okada).
- Melounova also made more history by becoming the program's first three-time Big West Player of the Year, and just the third Big West player to accomplish the feat in history. Melounova is also the first from UH to advance to her third NCAA Tournament. She finished her junior season with a 15-5 overall record and a 13-2 dual match record.
- Three other Rainbow Wahine earned Big West honors for the year—Senior Maayan Sela made the most of her one year at Hawai'i after transferring from Pacific. She earned all-Big West second team honors in singles and honorable mention honors in doubles with partner Alzbeta Houbova. Melounova was named all-BWC first team in both singles and doubles—with partner Nikola Dolakova—for the third straight year.
Track and Field
- Hawai'i track and field placed 20th at the MPSF Indoor Championships and ninth at the Big West Outdoor Championships.
- The Rainbow Wahine had a pair of NCAA West Preliminary qualifiers with junior Alexis Brenzil placing 13th in the javelin in her third trip to the prelims, while sophomore Kristen LaCosse finished 20th in the 400m hurdles at the event.
- UH built throughout the season leading up to the Big West Championships where a number of individuals posted career bests.
- Alexis Brenzil earned second place in the javelin at the Big West Championships with a personal-record distance of 49.58m (162'8") – the third-best distance in program history.
- In the heptathlon at the Big West Championships, junior Calli-Ann Abbott took home the bronze. Her 5,258 points were the second best ever by a Rainbow Wahine. Throughout the two-day heptathlon competition, Abbott captured personal bests in the high jump, shot put, 200m, long jump, javelin and 800m.
- The 4x100m relay team comprised of Martina Latting, Raion Black, Natasha Currence and Britney Price took third at the Big West Championships, marking the first medal UH has won at a conference championship meet.
Men's Volleyball
- Recorded a program-best 28 wins and finished as national runner-up, advancing to the championship match for just the third time in program history.
- Captured the program's first conference title — winning the Big West Tournament over top-seeded Long Beach State — and earned the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Championship for the first time in program history.
- Set an NCAA-record with a 74-set win streak while obliterating the previous mark of 32.
- Won its first 25 matches to start the season, setting a new program win streak, which is the sixth-longest in NCAA history.
- The senior class of Brett Rosenmeier, Dalton Solbrig, Stijn van Tilburg, and Joe Worsley finished with the most victories (90) during a four-year period in program history.
- Program-record four AVCA first-team All-Americans – Rado Parapunov, Stijn van Tilburg, Gage Worsley, Joe Worsley and five first-team all-Big West Conference – Parapunov, van Tilburg, G. Worsley, J. Worsley, and Patrick Gasman.
- Set a new NCAA record for highest single-season hitting percentage of .435 and finished as the national leader in four team categories — hitting percentage, kills per set (14.11), assists per set (13.20), and blocks per set (2.62).
- Finished with a perfect 16-0 record at the Stan Sheriff Center, where they led the nation in attendance with an average of 5,210 fans per match and had two sell-outs.
- Setter Joe Worsley was the nation's leader in assist per set (11.22).
- Nation's No. 1-ranked team for the final five weeks of the regular season.
- Senior Stijn van Tilburg was a three-time, first-team All-American, becoming just the third UH player to do so, and was picked to the Google Cloud Academic All-District 8 team.
Water Polo
- The Rainbow Wahine put together another strong season under eighth-year head coach Maureen Cole, culminating with the program's sixth-ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
- The 'Bows finished the season with an 18-6 overall record including a 4-1 mark in the Big West.
- The Rainbow Wahine were Big West Co-Regular Season Champions and defeated top-seeded UC Irvine by a 7-6 final score in the Big West Tournament Championship for the team's third Big West Tournament title.
- In the Collegiate Water Polo Association Poll, Hawai'i spent a majority of the season ranked number five and reached as high as number four for one week.
- Senior Irene Gonzalez led the high-powered offense with 60 goals en route to Big West Player of the Year honors and a spot on the Big West First Team.
- Gonzalez was joined on the Big West First Team by junior Elyse Lemay-Lavoie, while senior Femke Aan secured Second Team honors.
- Freshmen Maxine Schaap and Emma van Rossum both secured All-Big West Honorable Mention and a place on the Big West All-Freshman team.
- Head Coach Maureen Cole was voted Big West Coach of the Year for the third time in her career.
- In the NCAA Tournament at Stanford University, UH fell to fourth-ranked California by a 17-13 final score in the quarterfinals.
- The 'Bows went 7-1 in home games at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Center, highlighted by wins over number five Arizona State and number four California.
