HONOLULU – The University of Hawaiʻi baseball team could not overcome a fast start by Oregon in a 3-1 defeat on Friday night at Les Murakami Stadium. The loss is the first for UH (8-6) since Feb. 23 versus Iowa.
Oregon (8-4) scored twice in the opening inning to seize early control.
After yielding the two first-inning runs, UH starter
Dylan Thomas went the next 5.0 innings without giving up a run. The Preseason All-American finished with two earned runs on four hits in 6.0 innings in his second career start.
The score remained 2-0 in favor of the Ducks until the bottom of the fourth when the 'Bows were able to get a run back.
Alex Baeza doubled to right field, and
Ethan Lopez followed with an RBI single up the middle to send Baeza home.
Oregon starter Cullen Kafka kept the Rainbow Warriors off the scoreboard for the next three innings before giving way to Kolby Somers. Over the final two innings, Somers struck out two and did not allow a hit.
The Ducks finished the scoring in the top of the seventh on an RBI single from Jonny DeLuca.
Jack Kennelly posted a career-high two hits at the dish for Hawaiʻi, which finished with six hits as a team.
In relief of Thomas,
Logan Pouelsen pitched the final 3.0 innings for the 'Bows with three strikeouts while giving up one unearned run on two hits.
Game three of the series is scheduled for Saturday, March 9 at 6:35 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium.
