HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (13-5, 0-0 Big West) fell to California, 14-0 in five innings on Thursday night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Hawai'i starter Izzy Dino suffered the loss, dropping her record to 4-2 overall.
Cal overpowered UH, erupting for eight runs in the top of the second inning. Three runs came off a home run by Lindsay Rood which chased UH started Izzy Dino from the circle. with two more coming on a two-run homer, two batters later by Mikayla Coehlo.
The Golden Bears capitalized on three UH errors to score three runs in the fourth. And in the fifth inning, Cal tacked on three more runs—two coming on an RBI double by Lauren Espalin to take a 14-0 lead.
UH's pitching staff threw the game by committee. Dino started the game and threw the first 1.1 innings, allowing six runs on six hits while facing just 10 batters.
Emily Klee came into the game in the second inning to relieve Dino. She threw the next 1.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits with a strikeout.
Ashley Murphy started the fourth inning and gave up three runs on three hits with a walk and
Dominique Martinez came in to start the fifth inning. She allowed three runs on four hits.
Cal's Kamalani Dung fired a five-inning shutout. She spaced three hits with two walks and eight strikeouts while facing 20 batters.
It was UH's worse loss since falling to Oregon, 17-0 on Feb. 25, 2017. In tonight's game, Cal racked up 16 hits—seven of them for extra bases, including two home runs.
The Outrigger Resorts Spring Fling Tournament continues on Friday with three games. Hawai'i will take on Niagara at 6:00 pm in the final game of the day at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
