Rainbow Warriors Complete Sweep of Longwood

HONOLULU – The University of Hawaiʻi baseball team completed a four-game sweep of visiting Longwood with a 9-3 win over the Lancers on Tuesday night at Les Murakami Stadium.

The Rainbow Warriors (7-5) posted a season-best 15 hits and tied a season high with nine runs on Tuesday. On the mound, head coach Mike Trapasso utilized a staff game, throwing six different pitchers on the night.

Tuesday's starter, Dominic DeMiero went 3.1 innings without giving up a run to earn his first win of the season. The rest of the way, UH's final five pitchers gave up just four hits.

Five different players posted multi-hit games for Hawaiʻi including three hits apiece for Maaki Yamazaki and Logan Pouelsen.

Hawaiʻi started the scoring with a Yamazaki RBI double in the third to score Daylen Calicdan for a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the fourth, Pouelsen – who came in to pitch in relief - worked out of a bases-loaded jam to keep the 'Bows in front.

The Rainbow Warriors added to their lead when Ethan Lopez knocked an inside-the-park home run to left center field for a 2-0 advantage in the fourth. For the senior it is his ninth career home run and first this season.

Helping his own cause, Pouelsen knocked in a pair of runs in the fifth with a two-out single to bring in Scotty Scott – who led off with a single – and Calicdan – who walked earlier in the inning.

Two more runs in the bottom of the sixth put Hawaiʻi's lead at 6-0 when Yamazaki and Alex Baeza posted back-to-back RBI singles. The lead then stretched to 7-0 when Jack Kennelly grounded out to second base, plating Tyler Best.

After Longwood scored three times in the top of the eighth to make it 7-3, UH tacked on two more on RBI singles from Baeza and Brennen Hancock to put the game out of reach.

Next up for the Rainbow Warriors is a four-game series versus Oregon. The two sides will play single games March 7-10. The first three games are 6:35 p.m. start times with the final game set for a 1:05 p.m. start.
