Men’s Volleyball Sweeps CSUN Again; Extends Streak To 51

HONOLULU – The second-ranked University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team continued its dominance with a 25-16, 25-17, 25-18 victory over No. 12 CSUN Saturday, in a Big West Conference rematch at the Stan Sheriff Center.

The Rainbow Warriors (17-0, 4-0 BWC) extended their NCAA-best set win streak to 51 and avenged a series sweep by CSUN last season in Northridge. UH improved to 4-0 in Big West play and a perfect 10-0 versus nationally ranked teams this season.

Setter Joe Worsley directed a Hawai'i offense a .500 hitting percentage, dishing out 38 assists. Opposite Rado Parapunov did not commit a hitting error until the third set, hitting .520 with 17 kills, two aces, and two blocks. Middle blocker Dalton Solbrig added 10 kills, hitting .909 with three blocks. Outside hitter Colton Cowell and Stijn van Tilburg each had nine kills while Cowell added a career-high nine digs.

For the second straight night, the Matadors (10-10, 0-4) were led by Dimitar Kalchev, who had a team-high nine kills.

UH jumped out to an 8-3 advantage to start Set 1. The lead was 11 after Cowell's service run that led to seven straight points and a 18-7 cushion. The Warriors hit .560 in the set with Parapunov leading the way with five kills.

In Set 2, two early blocks by middle blocker Patrick Gasman gave the Warriors a 6-2 lead. Consecutive blocks by Solbrig put UH on top 12-5 and that was enough of an advantage as the Warriors took a two sets to none lead.

The Warriors trailed 6-3 early in Set 3 after committing four hitting errors. It took an ace by James Anastassiades for UH's first lead in the set at 13-12.  After the Matadors regained the lead, Hawai'i reeled off six straight – three by a pair of Parapunov kills and a block for a 19-15 lead. UH closed out the match with Parapunov's 17th kill.

The Warriors will begin a six-match road swing with beginning with the BYU Invitational, March 21-23 in Provo, Utah, where they will face McKendree, Princeton, and the host Cougars in the round-robin tournament.
