CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team continued its East Coast road trip with a straight-set win over Saint Francis (Pa.), Friday at the Levine Center. Scores for the teams' first-ever meeting was 25-15, 25-20, 25-12.
The Rainbow Warriors (7-0), who matched their best start under head coach
Charlie Wade with last year's squad, will close out the road trip with a rematch against Queens Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
Behind
Rado Parapunov's hitting (11 kills) and
Patrick Gasman's blocking (8 blocks), UH easily handled the Red Flash, who were coming off an upset win at nationally ranked Ohio State. Parapunov hit .714 in the match with two aces while Gasman added five kills. Outside hitters
Stijn van Tilburg and
Colton Cowell each had seven kills.
Michael Fisher had a match-high 13 kills for the Red Flash (5-4).
As a team, UH hit .585 compared to .200 for SFU.
The Warriors hit .737 in a dominant first set win before the Red Flash put a threat into UH's set streak, pulling to within 16-15 in Set 2. SFU was out-hitting Hawai'i for much of the set before the Warriors closed it out, 25-20 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
UH jumped out to an 8-1 lead in Set 3. Parapunov served out the match with both of his aces during a 7-0 match-ending run.
Hawai'i closes out its three-match road trip with another non-conference match-up against Queens, Saturday, at 7:30 p.m. ET. The Warriors easily defeated the Royals on Thursday.
