IRVINE, Calif.—University of Hawai'i men's tennis player
Andre Ilagan earned his first career Big West Athlete of the Week award after going 3-0 in singles at the UNLV Tournament in Las Vegas, Nev. last week.
Ilagan helped the Rainbow Warriors to a 2-2 record in Vegas with wins over Weber State and UC Riverside, and losses to UNLV and New Mexico State.
Ilagan went 3-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles as the standout performer in the lineup. He earned straight set victories over Weber State's Junhao Ye (6-3, 6-0) at No. 2 singles, then moved up to No. 1 against UCR's Kyle McCann, posting a 6-3, 6-1 win. Ilagan then came back to record a three-set win (6-3, 3-6, 6-3) over UNLV's Olle Thestrup on the No. 1 court.
In doubles with partner
Lucas Labrunie, the UH duo won a 6-2 decision at No. 2 doubles over WSU's Bo-Han Li and Cezary Walkus. The duo got promoted to No. 1 for their match against UCR's Nabil Abdallah and Filip Engstrom, and were victorious in a 7-6 (3) tiebreaker.
Ilagan is the first Rainbow Warrior to earn Big West Athlete of the Week honors since
Felix Albert (4/26/17). He is the first UH rookie to earn the award since Kai Wehnelt (1/28/15). Ilagan is also the first local player to earn the weekly accolade since Carter Lam in 2015.
