HONOLULU – Former University of Hawai'i golfer Guy Yamamoto is the 2018 recipient of the Kāne Fernandez Community Service Award, presented by the UH Mānoa Letterwinners Club.
Yamamoto, who lettered at UH from 1983-85, received his award at halftime of the UH men's basketball game on Saturday, March 2.
The UHLWC presents the award to a past letterwinner who has volunteered unselfishly to further advance the community. The award is named for the late Kāne Fernandez, chairman and chief executive office of Fernandez Entertainment, who passed away in 2001 and is one of the original members of the UHLWC.
Yamamoto is currently the General Manager of the Royal Hawaiian Golf Club. In his competitive playing days, he won the 1994 United States Amateur Public Links Championship and was inducted into the Hawai'i Golf Hall of Fame in 2014. He is the only UH golfer to ever play in the Masters Tournament in Augusta, Ga.
Yamamoto's community service includes being a board member of the UHLWC, a member of the Water Stakeholder Advisory Group of the Honolulu Board of Water Supply, a Board of Director of the David S. Ishii Foundation, and Vice President of the O'ahu Junior Golf Association. He has helped hundreds of youngsters pursue their place in the sport of golf, instilling values such as honesty, integrity, and good sportsmanship.
