LIHU'E, KAUA'I – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team improved eight strokes from its opening round with a 296 in Round 2 of the 43
rd John A. Burns Intercollegiate Friday at the Wailua Golf Course.
The Rainbow Warriors moved up to a tie for 19
th place with a 600 total. No. 11 Arizona State holds the team lead at 558 while No. 2 Duke (560) vaulted up the leaderboard in second place after second round 275. Two-time champion Texas A&M is third at 564.
The individual leaderboard is bunched at the top with BYU's Rhett Rasmussen (66) holding a one-stroke lead over UC Santa Barbara's Zach Smith (66) and UTEP's Aaron Terrazas (67). Rasmussen is 8-under 136 for the tournament.
Two-time defending champion Chandler Phillips of Texas A&M is in a tie for 13
th place at 4-under.
Senior
Cameron Kaneko shot 1-over 73 to lead the Rainbow Warriors. The Huntington Beach, Calif., native is tied for 74
th at 5-over 149. Sophomore
Justin Arcano carded a 74 and is 3-over for the tournament and tied for 58
th place.
Also competing for the Rainbow Warriors are senior
Bryden Salvador (75) and sophomores
Justin Ngan (74) and
Cole Yoshida (75). Kaua'i-native Salvador and Ngan are tied for 91
st at 152 while Yoshida is one stroke back at 153 and a tie for 95
th.
Four UH golfers are competing as individuals – junior
Nick Nelson (74), sophomore
Matt Lloyd (78), sophomore
Trevor Hirata (80), and freshman
AJ Teraoka (97).
The third and final round is scheduled for Saturday with a 8:00 a.m., shotgun start.
