Hawai‘i Baseball Defeats Iowa, 7-1

HONOLULU – Standout pitching performances from Jeremy Wu-Yelland and Cade Smith combined with a strong hitting effort from the lineup carried the University of Hawaiʻi baseball team to a 7-1 victory over visiting Iowa at Les Murakami Stadium on Friday night.

For the Rainbow Warriors (2-3), Wu-Yelland did not give up a hit in 5.0 inning of work in his second start of the season. The sophomore southpaw worked through five walks to not yield a run to earn the win. Out of the bullpen, Smith delivered 4.0 innings, giving up just one run on four hits to pick up the save.

At the dish, the 14 hits are the most for the 'Bows through the first five games of the 2019 season.

Hawaiʻi got the scoring going in the bottom of the third sparked by a leadoff single from freshman Tyler Best. Fellow freshman Scotty Scott followed with an RBI triple, and senior Maaki Yamazaki's RBI groundout put the score at 2-0.

The Rainbow Warriors added to their lead in the fourth with another RBI groundout from Yamazaki. The next batter, Adam Fogel, knocked in two more runs with a double for a 5-0 advantage.

Ethan Lopez led off the fifth with a double and ending up scoring on a single from Alex Baeza. Scott drove in UH's final run on an infield single to stretch the lead up to 7-0.

Iowa (2-2) got a run back in the top of the 7th on a UH throwing error, but Smith shut the door the rest of the way to earn the save.

Tanner Wetrich came up with two hits to lead the Hawkeyes' offense. For the Rainbow Warriors, Fogel, Baeza and Best secured three hits apiece.

UH and Iowa will play a doubleheader on Saturday at Les Murakami Stadium with the first game beginning at 1:05 p.m.
