AVCA Pacific North All-Region Accolades Awarded to Four Rainbow Wahine

LEXINGTON, Ky.--Four members of the University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team earned American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Pacific North All-Region honors on Tuesday. Head coach Robyn Ah Mow earned All-Region Coach of the Year, Norene Iosia earned All-Region honors, while both Hanna Hellvig and Amber Igiede were named All-Region Honorable Mention.

It marked the first All-Region Coach of the Year honor for third-year head coach Ah Mow. Two weeks ago, she was named Big West Co-Coach of the Year for the first time, sharing the honor with Cal State Fullerton's Ashley Preston. For Hawai'i, it marked the 12th time and first since 2012 that a UH head coach took home all-Region Coach of the Year honors. All 12 previous COY awards were given to legendary head coach Dave Shoji, who was at the helm of the Rainbow Wahine program for 42 seasons before retiring in 2016.This season, Ah Mow has her squad on a 13-match win streak and advancing to its first NCAA Regional since 2015. The 'Bows captured the Big West title for the first time since 2016 and the first time under Ah Mow's leadership. She has led Hawai'i to a 26-3 overall record this season, which is the most wins for UH since 2015, when the 'Bows went 29-2 and advanced to the NCAA Regional Finals in Des Moines, Iowa.

Last season, for the first time in 37 years UH did not have a player garner AVCA All-Region honors. This season, three Rainbow Wahine earned All-Region honors. Leading the way was senior setter/opposite Iosia. Iosia is one of only two Rainbow Wahine along with fellow setter Bailey Choy to play all 111 sets this season. Iosia leads UH with 626 assists, 318 digs and 48 service aces. After being called into double duty against CSUF as the opposite, Iosia has recorded 78 kills and 37 total blocks. She has tallied 19 double-doubles in 29 matches this season and 63 in her career, which doesn't includes five triple-doubles from last season. Iosia continues to climb the UH record books as well. She is ranked No. 2 in UH history with 139 service aces, No. 8 with 1,162 digs and No. 9 in assists with 3,129. Iosia became the 10th Rainbow Wahine to be named Big West Player of the Year and the 25th overall to earn conference Player of the Year. She is just the second UH setter to earn POY honors and just the seventh Hawai'i player to earn all-conference first team honors all four years.

As a freshman, Hellvig has had to shoulder much of the offensive load since the eighth match of the season. She has been solid all season and leads UH with 342 kills and is averaging 3.14 kills per set. Hellvig, a native of Lidongo, Sweden, has been in on 78 total blocks with 189 digs, and 15 service aces. Before she moved over to play opposite midway through the conference season, Hellvig started the season as a six-rotation player who recorded five double-doubles this year. She is the fourth Rainbow Wahine to earn the Big West's Freshman of the Year award—first since fellow country-woman and current associate coach Angelica Ljungqvist in 1993. Hellvig was also named to the all-Big West first team and the all-freshman team.

Fellow freshman, middle blocker Igiede has become a formidable force on the court. The rookie, from Baton Rouge, La. leads UH with 125 total blocks—including 19 solo. She is also second on the team with 211 kills and a .359 hitting percentage. She has shown her versatility on the Teraflex recording 45 digs, seven assists, two service aces and has one double-double (10K/10B vs. CSUF) this season. Igiede, along with Hellvig, also earned a spot on the Big West all-freshman team.

It is the 79th time in UH history that a Rainbow Wahine has earned All-Region honors. For Hellvig and Igiede it is the sixth and seventh times that UH players earned All-Region honorable mention accolades. All-Region awardees are now eligible to earn AVCA All-America honors which will be announced in a week.

From the Big West, Cal Poly's Maia Dvoracek earned her first AVCA All-Pacific North Region honor. For the third time UC Santa Barbara's Lindsey Ruddins earned All-Pacific South Region honors. Her teammate Tallulah Froley picked up honorable mention recognition.
