INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.—For the first time since 2013, the University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team will be going dancing at the Stan Sheriff Center. On Sunday, The Rainbow Wahine earned the No. 12 seed in the 2019 NCAA Tournament and will be hosting the first and second round in Honolulu. Hawai'i will open the First Round against Northern Colorado on Friday, December 6 at 7:00 p.m.. In the other match-up, San Diego will take on Washington State.
It is the 19th time that UH will host an opening round match in the NCAA Tournament. For Hawai'i, it is UH's 38th overall and 27th-consecutive NCAA tournament appearance.
Hawai'i (24-3, 14-2 Big West) won the Big West title outright to earn the league's automatic bid for the first time since 2016. UH finished the season on an 11-match win streak—its longest streak of the season.
Northern Colorado, the Big Sky regular season and tournament champions, come to Hawai'i with a 26-7 overall record. The Bears went 17-1 in conference action. It is UNC's fifth trip to the NCAA tournament and second time coming to Hawai'i for the first and second rounds after coming in 2011.
20th-ranked San Diego will make its second appearance to the Islands this year. The Toreros opened the season in UH's Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic tournament to begin the year. USD finished the season with a 24-5 overall record and a 17-1 league record to capture the West Coast Conference title.
25th-ranked Washington State finished the year with a 23-9 overall record and was fifth in the PAC-12 with a 12-8 conference record. This is the fourth consecutive NCAA appearance for the Cougars.
For the first time since 2013, the Big West Conference has three teams advancing to the NCAA tournament. In addition to Hawai'i, both Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara earned at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament.
Thirty-two conferences were awarded automatic qualification, and the remaining 32 slots were filled with at-large selections to complete the bracket.
