KA'ANAPALI, Maui - After the first 18 holes of the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational, junior
Kanata Irei leads the University of Hawai'i men's golf team after his two-under par round of 69 at the Royal Ka'anapali Golf Course. As a team, the Rainbow Warriors finished 2-under par 282 on the day and sit in a tie for 13th place.
The Okinawa, Japan-native and senior
Nick Nelson (70, t-47) had the lowest rounds for the Rainbow Warriors. Nelson led the team with five birdies, while Irei followed closely with four of his own. Irei, who is tied for 33rd, birdied the 13th hole which saw 38 bogeys and nine double-bogeys or worse.
Also in the lineup for UH were
Justin Ngan (71, t-57),
Trevor Hirata (72, t-69) and
Kotaro Murata (73, t-80).
Three Rainbow Warriors are competing as individuals and had strong rounds on Friday. Junior
Matt Lloyd leads the three individuals and shot even par 71 on the day. Junior
Cole Yoshida carded 72 and
AJ Teraoka posted 76.
Kansas and Oklahoma are tied atop the team leaderboard at 268 after the first round. Garett Reband of Oklahoma and Andy Spencer of Kansas are tied for the lead after each shooting 64 on the day.
Hawai'i will tee off the second round at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday at Royal Ka'anapali Golf Course.
