HONOLULU— The University of Hawai'I women's basketball team fell in Big West Conference play to visiting CSUN, 49-29 Thursday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The Rainbow Wahine (5-11, 1-2) have started the conference schedule by trading wins and losses through the first three games, and have now lost three straight home games against CSUN. The Matadors (8-9, 2-1) take a one-game edge over UH in the all-time series at 9-8 with the win. The two squads will meet up again in the last game of the regular season in Northridge, California on Mar. 9.
"Defense was not a problem for us tonight," said head coach
Laura Beeman. "We weren't focused at shootaround, and we didn't have our focus throughout the game. We're not a team that can come in and just play, then expect to win. We have to maintain our focus."
The first half set the tone for the night as UH struggled to put the ball through the cylinder. The 'Bows went 5-of-28 from the floor for 18 percent and 1-of-13 from beyond the arc at seven percent. Both shooting performances were season lows for UH in one half of action, leading to a 27-12 deficit.
As the game progressed, UH continued to struggle from the field, finishing the night at 12-of-54 from the floor and 3-for-23 from three-point territory. Defensively UH kept the CSUN in check with only two players finishing in double figures, while the Matadors only shot 35 percent from the floor, and committed 17 turnovers.
Sophomore center
Lauren Rewers finished tied with a team-high five points for the 'Bows and led the team in rebounds with seven.
UH will return to action in one week with a visit to Cal Poly on Thursday, Jan. 24 followed by a matchup at UC Santa Barbara on Saturday, Jan. 26.
