Reno, Nev.— A total of 110 minutes was not enough as the University of Hawaii soccer team ended their night against Nevada with a 1-1 tie.
The Rainbow Wahine (3-2-1) remain undefeated in road contests and are now 5-0-2 in overtime matches over the last two seasons. The Wolf Pack (3-2-2) have not won a match since a 2-1 win over Southern Utah University on Aug. 26, going 0-2-1 in their last three contest.
"We were prepared today for a very physical, fast-paced game and that's exactly what we got," said head
Michele Nagamine. "We struggled a bit with the narrow size of the field, but I thought we did a good job of creating a ton of chances that we just couldn't finish, so that's what we'll address in training next week."
UH came out firing in the first 45 minutes of action with seven shots including four shots on goal. Sophomore midfielder
Leialoha Medeiros notched her third goal of the season in the 16th minute when senior midfielder
Raisa Strom-Okimoto found her in the box off a corner kick for her team-leading second assists of the season. Medeiros and Strom-Okimoto have each notched three goals this season, and the two have combined to score or assists on seven of the 10 UH goals in 2018.
The Wolf Pack matched the offensive intensity throughout the match, picking up the match-tying goal in the second half. Kathryn Yarbrough took an assist from Hannah Souza in the 67th minute, for a header whizzing past redshirt junior goalkeeper
Alexis Mata.
Except for the game-tying goal, Mata showcased her brilliance once again with six saves, including one crucial save coming in each of the two extra periods.
"Scoring goals are the hardest part of the game, but we need to finish the opportunities we create," said Nagamine. "I give my team a lot of credit for playing tough for 110 minutes tonight. We've lost the last two times we've come here, so we'll take the tie tonight."
The Rainbow Wahine will have two days off and head west for a Sunday matinee at San Francisco. Match time is slated for 10 a.m. HT (1 p.m. PT) and will be broadcast live on Stadium.
