HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (13-11, 0-0 Big West) began the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic with a nine inning 4-3 win over North Dakota (13-13, 0-0 Big Sky). UH's Danille Garcielita hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth to drive in
Chardonnay Pantastico from third for the win. UH starter
Dana Thomsen threw all nine innings for the complete game win on Wednesday night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Thomsen allowed three runs on just two hits with two walks. She tied her season high by striking out nine batters. It was the longest career appearance in the circle for Thomsen.
In the top of the first, UND's Angel Love hit a two run home run for an early 2-0 lead.
Hawai'i cut their deficit in half on an RBI single up the middle with one out by
Callee Heen. Heen's hit drove in
Jennifer Iseri who started the rally with a one-out single up the middle.
In the bottom of the fifth, UH tied the score at 2-2.
Britnee Rossi reached first on a fielding error on the shortstop as it ricocheted off her leg which allowed Rossi to hustle into second. Iseri executed a sacrifice bunt to push Rossi to third. Rossi then scored on another error off a ball hit Heen.
In the top of the eighth with international tie breaker in place, the Golden Hawks scored first on a sacrifice fly by pinch hitter Marty Martin to go up 3-2.
But in the bottom of the eighth,
Nicole Lopez started at second base. She moved to third on a groundout to second by Heen.
Rachael Turner then drove in Lopez to knot the score at 3-3 with an RBI single through the leftside of the infield.
In the top of the ninth, UND moved the runner at second to third on a single up the middle by Kaylin VanDomelen. The next batter hit a comebacker to Thomsen who looked the runner back at third before throwing out the batter at first. Thomsen then stranded both runners at second and third when she picked up her ninth strikeout of the game to end the inning.
Hawai'i came up in the bottom of the ninth with Pantastico placed on second.
Heather Cameron struck out swinging, but on the play the ball was in the dirt to force a throw to first for the out which allowed Pantastico to sprint to third. Garcielita then lifted the sac fly to centerfield to drive in Pantastico for the 4-3 win.
It was UH's longest game since 2016 when the 'Bows edged out North Dakota State, 7-6 in nine innings in Honolulu,
UND's starterVanDomelen also threw a complete game in the loss. She fell to 6-7 overall. VanDomelen threw 8.2 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.
The Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic continues on Thursday. Hawai'i will play a doubleheader to end a four-game day at the RWSS. UH will take on Cleveland State first at 5:00 pm followed by No. 4 Tennessee at 7:00 pm.
