Trevor Hirata shot a second round 70 Friday at the 42
nd John A. Burns Intercollegiate at the Wailua Golf Course.
Competing as an individual, the Hilo, Hawai'i native carded four birdies and two bogeys on his round and completed his final nine holes in 2-under par. Hirata's 2-under 70 was UH's best individual score of the tournament among the team's 11 golfers. He vaulted 36 spots up the leaderboard and is tied for 52
nd at 3-over 147.
As a team, the Rainbow Warriors posted 307 for a 616 total and currently sit in 20
th place. No. 49 UNLV continues to lead the team standings at 555, six strokes clear of fourth-ranked Texas A&M (561). No. 42 Arizona is third (566) followed by No. 28 North Carolina (567) and No. 31 Brigham Young (570).
UNLV's Shintaro Ban holds a three-stroke lead entering Saturday's final round after a second round 68 and is 11-under for the tournament. Defending individual tournament champion Chandler Phillips of Texas A&M is three strokes back at 8-under 136 along with Arizona's David Laskin.
The tournament, which is being held at Wailua for the fifth consecutive year and sixth time overall, features its largest field in years with a total of 122 golfers.
