LIHU'E, Kaua'i – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team completed the first round of the 42
nd John A. Burns Intercollegiate Thursday at Kaua'i's Wailua Golf Course.
The Rainbow Warriors currently sit in 20
th place with a 309 total. No. 49 UNLV is the Round 1 leader at 270 and is led by Shintaro Ban, who carded a 7-under 65.
The tournament, which is being held at Wailua for the fifth consecutive year and sixth time overall, features its largest field in years with a total of 122 golfers.
Leading the host school are freshman
Justin Arcano and junior
Cameron Kaneko, who each shot 76 and are tied for 69
th place. Freshman
Justin Ngan carded 78 and is tied for 97
th while senior
Smart Kittirattanapaiboon shot 79 and is tied for 107
th. Sophomore
Nick Nelson posted 82 and is tied for 117
th.
Behind UNLV in the team standings is fourth-ranked Texas A&M (283) followed by No. 28 North Carolina and No. 31 Brigham Young (284), and No. 37 Saint Mary's and Utah (285). Defending individual tournament champion Chandler Phillips of Texas A&M is four strokes back at 3-under 69 and tied for seventh.
